The devastating fire that tore through a London tower block last week was beyond shocking. As flames engulfed Grenfell Tower at terrifying speed, desperate mothers threw their babies from windows while stricken families perished waiting for help that would never reach them in time. Horror was coupled with outrage as it soon emerged that residents had warned of the dangers of the building, accurately predicting that it was “a disaster waiting to happen.” But alongside the fear and despair, there was something else too – bravery, courage, selflessness and a sense of community, which swung into action to help those whose lives have been torn apart. Our report on page 14 reminds us that the very worst of circumstances can bring out the very best in people.…
