You’ll soon receive an alert when your phone and broadband contract is about to end, under new rules aimed at preventing loyal customers from being ripped off. Telecoms watchdog Ofcom wants to force companies to “proactively inform” customers when their contract is due to expire, giving them the chance to find a cheaper deal. Currently millions of customers are automatically moved to a higher tariff once their initial contract expires, with many not realising they are paying more. An estimated 15 million households – around a third of all customers – are in this position. In addition, around six million people have remained on phone contracts despite having paid off the cost of their phone. Defence secretary Gavin Williamson (pictured) has called for computing experts to join the Armed Forces in order to combat cyber-attacks. The MP said the British Army, Royal Navy and Air Force should try to attract “people with amazing cyber and IT skills”, and confirmed that Russia is the UK’s main “strategic threat”. You can now use your phone to help cancer research as part of a medical project to harness the data-processing power of 100,000 devices. Imperial College London has teamed up with Vodafone to launch the DreamLab app (pictured). This analyses data about different combinations of drugs that can be tailored to a patient’s genetic profile. The app works during the night while your phone is charging and connected to the internet. It downloads a small packet of data – about 5MB – and shows you how many calculations have been “crunched” during a session. Vodafone customers get this data for free, while others may have to pay a download fee. I found it interesting that you used the word ‘controversial’ to describe AOL’s decision to show personalised adverts alongside emails (News, Issue 527, page 8). Surely it would’ve been even more controversial if AOL had said it was turning off all adverts and was starting to charge users instead? Web users have to realise that companies can make money in only two ways – through advertising, or charging for the product. I used to run a small business that advertised heavily online. Regarding the letter from Dave Gwyther in Issue 526 (‘Virgin also guilty of crimes against broadband’), I can’t understand why many people say that Virgin Media is terrible. I have been with Virgin for years. I have TV via a V6 box (pictured), broadband up to 70Mbps (usually 50Mbps) and a home phone. I can honestly say that the service I’ve received is superb. As IBM-compatible and Apple computers began to dominate, AppleLink and PC Link were added. In 1989, it was rebranded America Online. “Police used facial recognition to reunite 3,000 missing children with their families” What is it? Technology that analyses a person’s face in order to identify them. It ‘reads’ the face, whether live on video or from recorded footage or a photograph, then tries to find a match in its database. How can it do this? There are several methods, which some systems combine to maximise accuracy. The most common examines a face’s features (or ‘landmarks’), such as the position, size and shape of the eyes, nose, cheekbones and jaw. Every face has about 80 nodal points that computers can use to distinguish between people. These include depth of the eye sockets and the distance between the eyes. More advanced is 3D recognition. Forget all your passwords (except one) Can’t live with ’em,can’t live without ’em, can’t remember ’em anyway. Passwords are the internet’s worst Catch-22: if you can memorise them, they’re not secure enough. So use a tool that creates and memorises them for you. The newly revamped LastPass (for all major browsers from www.lastpass.com) adds a Generate Secure Password option to the right-click menu (see screenshot below). Click it when setting up a new web account, and LastPass will generate a random password for you. Q I am running Windows 10 Home on my computer, which connects to my BT Home Hub 4 router via an Ethernet cable. I also have several devices that connect wirelessly, via Wi-Fi, and have a BT Dual-Band Wi-Fi Extender 600 to ensure coverage throughout the house. There are lights on this gadget to indicate range, from ‘Too close’ to ‘Too far’ – with ‘Good range’ in the middle (see screenshot). A security fix for the latest Windows 10 Feature update – called the April 2018 Update (version 1803) - is crashing computers, leaving them stuck on black screens. The problem began when Microsoft released its monthly batch of fixes on 8 May - these are the ‘Patch Tuesday’ updates that arrive on the second Tuesday of every month. Microsoft said the update, numbered KB4103721, fixed a problem with the April 2018 Update that caused “some devices to stop responding or working when using applications, such as Cortana or Chrome”. But users on Microsoft’s Community forum (www.snipca.com/27850) complained that it prevented their PCs from starting, showing just a black screen and nothing else. Road-safety campaigners in the UK have urged the Government to consider introducing cutting-edge cameras that catch drivers using phones, after new laws were passed in Australia allowing police to use them. New South Wales police will be the first to use the cameras, which run software that automatically detects a driver using a phone. It follows a 12-hour trial in Sydney in which police detected more than 400 drivers making calls, texting or taking selfie photos. New South Wales minister for roads Melinda Pavey said the cameras could be as “revolutionary” as the breathalyser. The RAC agrees, calling them a potential “game-changer”. Google has unveiled new technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to convert your old black-and-white photos into colour. The ‘Colorize’ tool (pictured), still being developed, will be added to Google Photos (https://photos.google.com) when it’s ready for release. Google said it was inspired by how many people use its PhotoScan app (www.google.com/photos/scan) to scan old black-and-white pictures. The tool will ‘learn’ which colours work best for particular elements in a photo, such as green for grass. It will be much trickier to colorise things like skin, so Google will launch the tool only when it’s “really right”. I had trouble getting it charged within the first four months, so Garmin sent me a USB cable, which worked. However, the same problem has reoccurred. WATCH OUT FOR… Fake ad-blocking Chrome extensions What’s the threat? Security researchers found fake ad-blocking extensions for Google’s Chrome browser, some with names deliberately designed to sound like genuine tools. These fakes, downloaded more than 20 million times, were absorbing users’ browsers into a botnet. The criminals’ tactic was to exploit how similar and generic the names of ad-blocking tools are. Adblock Plus, AdBlock and uBlock Origin are all real extensions, so it doesn’t take a criminal mastermind to work out that imposters called uBlock Plus, Adblock Pro and AdRemover for Chrome would fool people into installing them. They were uncovered by Andrey Meshkov, a researcher at AdGuard, a legitimate ad-blocker. Most of us by now have broadband with a Wi-Fi router, but it’s still common to suffer unreliable or slow connections in rooms further away or through thick walls. If your router is very old, replacing it with an 802.11ac model is a good start, but it may not fix those signal black spots. One solution is a Wi-Fi extender, basically a second router. They can be fiddly to set up, though, and may still not cover all of a larger home. Mesh networks are the new alternative, and work very well, so the only drawback is price. Chrome’s experimental reader mode, Distill, has been around since long before Windows 10, but it’s still not made it into Chrome proper. However, you can enable it with a secret tweak. With Chrome closed, right-click its taskbar shortcut, right-click Google Chrome in the list, and then click Properties. You’ll soon be able to copy and paste items across different computers using Microsoft’s revamped clipboard. It has appeared in a preview build of Redstone 5, the codename for the next Features update of Windows 10, due this autumn. Pressing the Windows key+V opens the ‘cloud clipboard’, in which you can currently save plain text, HTML and images less than 1MB. It also lets you ‘pin’ items you open often, and shows you a history of what you’ve already copied. At the moment it works between computers running Windows 10, but Android and iOS may be added before it’s released fully. To turn on the clipboard you have to click the sliders ‘Save multiple items’ and ‘Sync across devices’ in the Clipboard section in Settings (see screenshot).…

Over the years, I’ve become quite friendly with the delivery drivers who serve my area, even if their tight schedules discourage me from inviting them in for a cuppa. Sadly, not all drivers are the personable type. When Manchester resident David Kirk missed a delivery in April he came home to find an Amazon card stuck through his door with ‘ANSWER YOUR PHONE!!’ written on it in aggressive blue biro, next to an ‘angry’ face (pictured). Perhaps the driver was trying to be funny, but he should have realised that the tone was inappropriate, and could be seen as intimidating. Before emailing us, reader Dave Price faced the expensive prospect of paying £500 to replace the motherboard in his HP Envy x360 laptop-tablet (see Issue 526), which cost him £760. That was PC World’s drastic solution to the problem of the USB 3.0 port no longer working. We weren’t convinced by this, so eagerly took up Dave’s case. We told PC World that if the fault was inherent, it must offer him a replacement or refund. Because more than six months have passed since purchase, PC World could have asked Dave to prove the fault was inherent. Microsoft would dearly love you to browse the web using Edge, its default choice in Windows 10. So why is it offering phishing protection for its arch rival Chrome? Probably because it realises Edge is doomed (its worldwide market share is just four per cent), and that someone who is scammed while browsing on Chrome is just as likely to blame the operating system (ie, Windows). This extension is a generous gift from Microsoft, because it uses the company’s SmartScreen technology that helped Edge score 99 per cent in an independent security test last year (beating Chrome and Firefox, see www.snipca.com/27695). How can I compare folders and remove duplicates? Q Can you recommend a program for comparing two different folders or directories? Similarly, would you be able to suggest a duplicate file finder? Alain Franck-Steier A When you copy files or folders from one location to another – to make a backup copy on an external drive, for example – it’s not always clear whether the operation was completed successfully. One way to check would be to compare the two locations to see if there are differences, but File Explorer can’t do this. Although drones can feel like toys, they bring real safety risks. To fly one for paid work, you have to complete a training course (at least £1,000), take out insurance and apply for a licence: see www.snipca.com/27721. ANDROID & iOS Snooze emails within Gmail In our Workshop on page 35, we show you how to use the new web version of Gmail. One of the new features is the ability to ‘snooze’ emails, letting you hide them until a convenient time that you set. The feature has been available on Gmail for Android for a while now, but has recently been added to the iOS version. Open Gmail (default on Android; iOS www.snipca.com/27825), then tap to select the email that you want to snooze. When it opens, tap the three dots at the top right, then tap Snooze. WINDOWS 10 Edit images within Windows Mail Windows 10’s default Mail app lets you rotate and crop photos after you’ve added them. To do this, open the Mail app, click ‘+New mail’ at the top left, then type the recipients and subject line. Next, click the Insert tab at the top, Pictures, navigate to and select the photo on your PC that you want to add, then click Insert. You’ll see a new Picture tab with options. Clicking Rotate displays four options to rotate and flip your photo (see screenshot below). The Crop button displays black bars around the photo’s edges. The Snipping Tool is the kind of program you’re likely to use frequently, so it’s sensible to create a keyboard shortcut to open it. In Windows 7, Click Start, ‘All programs’, then Accessories. Right-click the Snipping Tool, then click Properties. Go to the Shortcut tab, click in the ‘Shortcut key’ box, press the key you want to use for your shortcut, then click OK. Windows will now assign that key, prefixed by CTRL+ALT. So if you chose ‘S’ you can access Snipping Tool by pressing CTRL+ALT+S. It’s a similar procedure in Windows 10. Adblock Plus, Ghostery, OneTab and many other extensions we recommend here demand some hair-raising permissions. In Chrome, they want to ‘Read and change all your data on the websites that you visit’. In Firefox, they want a whole list of privileges including ‘Access (to) your data for all websites (and) browser activity’ (see screenshot right). Crumbs. Here’s more bad news. These permissions are everywhere. Browsers now request them as standard for extensions that affect the way websites load. It’s not sinister, it’s simply how these tools work. For example Adblock Plus needs to access internet data going to and from your browser, so it can spot and block ads en route. It’s great that browsers are being transparent. Q Since the Fall Creators Update (FCU) was automatically applied to my Windows 10 PC, it refuses to shut down. Or rather, when I click the ‘Shut down’ option in the Start menu my PC duly shows the ‘Shutting down’ message and my two screens momentarily go blank. Then, seconds later, it starts up again.
