At a meeting of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in the KwaZulu- Natal provincial legislature yesterday, the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) revealed that following a thorough assessment it found that the backpay had been exaggerated. The department said the figure was exaggerated based on the assumption that all the vacancies of izinduna were filled and that all had worked the same number of months. The past reports had stated that there were more than 3 000 izinduna across the province. The department however admitted that it still could not afford to pay this reduced amount and was steadfast…

Aggravated by fiddly financial apps, retired urologist Carlos San Juan got more than he bargained for when he began a campaign for a more user-friendly service from Spain’s banks. The 78-year-old kicked off a revolt dubbed “I’m old, not an idiot” online at the end of December and by mid-February had more than 640 000 signatures, forcing a change of tack. Zelda Venter zelda.venter@inl.co.za A MAN who had to sit in a smelly police cell for two days because he would not pay a R10 000 bribe to police officers has been awarded damages of R275 000. Bhekumuzi Nhlapo, 41, was watching television when police officers burst into his home. They claimed the chassis number of his car was tampered with and threatened to arrest him if he did not pay R10 000. Nhlapo refused to pay the bribe. The police detained him and left him for two days in an overcrowded and unventilated police cell. Nhlapo turned to the Johannesburg High Court, where he claimed between R250 000 and R300 000 in damages. The police at first denied that the incident happened, but they eventually admitted liability. Muzi Euchalystius Mkhize, 57, a Detective Warrant Officer in the SAPS, was convicted and sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court this week, following the death of Senior State Advocate Addelaid Ann Ferreira Watt, 62. Excess weight raises the risk of Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, death and disability Obesity is a disease with medical consequences estimated at $1 trillion (about R15 trillion) by 2025. This has been worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic, as those living with obesity are twice as likely to be admitted to hospital for the disease. Childhood obesity often continues into adulthood and increases the risk of non-communicable diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as premature death and disability. At the psychosocial level, children living with obesity are more likely to experience low self-esteem, depression, and social isolation. Romania’s military was yesterday mourning after separate helicopter and fighter jet crashes in bad weather near the Black Sea that killed eight personnel in its deadliest day in years. San Francisco: After less than two years since its launch, Meta-owned Facebook is shutting down its college students-only social network – Campus. Campus users could access a special news feed and join groups, events and chat rooms focused on college life. The transactions were highlighted in a recent report by the metro’s audit committee. The audit committee briefed the municipality’s executive committee last month on a series of concerning systematic failures that are costing the municipality millions of rand. Under fraud risk management, the committee highlighted many fraud-related concerns, including that the municipality had lost about R45m through fraudulent transactions. The municipality declined to elaborate on the nature of these transactions, only saying it was a matter that had been reported to the police. The Children, Social Assistance and Food Security Research Report, commissioned by human rights organisation the Black Sash, was released last week. According to the South African Medical Research Council’s Wanga Zembe-Mkabile, the study used case study methodology to collect information from 12 primary caregivers of child support grant (CSG) recipients and their children in the Western Cape. The research aimed to understand how primary caregivers and children receiving social assistance experience food security. A KwaZulu-Natal father who raped his daughter in 2019 has been handed a life sentence. The 32-year-old was convicted and sentenced in the Verulam Regional Court this week. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) the incident took place in November 2019 in the Cottonlands area. Russian forces with high-precision weapons disabled a reserve radio and television centre in Kyiv, Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said yesterday. He said the centre had been used by the Security Service of Ukraine. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan yesterday claimed that it had intercepted and tracked India’s submarine INS Kalvari’s movement in its territorial waters. Pakistan also shared the video of interception on a social media platform. The claims were made by Major General Babar Iftikhar, who also stated that the incident took place on March 1. The SIU’s investigation was authorised by President Cyril Ramaphosa in November 2020, and it had to look at grants that were approved between 2014 and 2020. “The disciplinary hearing into the conduct of the NLC’s chief operations officer (Phillemon Letwaba) that began in early 2022 has been concluded. The commissioner of the NLC has received the report from the chairperson of the hearing, and delivered the same to Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ebrahim Patel. This was revealed by uMngeni mayor Chris Pappas as he celebrated his 100 days in office this week. RIYADH: A Saudi Arabian court handed down a new death sentence against a young man for crimes committed when he was a minor after a higher court overturned a previous ruling, his family said, in what rights groups called a “grossly unfair trial”. Abdullah al-Huwaiti was arrested when he was 14 years old and sentenced to death three years later in 2019 on murder and armed robbery charges.
