Last summer, Seventeen and TLC’s Say Yes to the Prom teamed up on a contest to find a school to win the prom of a lifetime. The winner: Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School in New York, NY, which was founded in 2010 and empowers its students to speak up for change. The first class of seniors—who actively volunteer in their communities—graduates in June, but the expense of going to prom would have been a struggle for many of them: Ninety percent of the student body comes from low-income households, and the school doesn’t have the budget to cover all their fees.
