know your pattern weights

Using pattern weights is a method of cutting out by placing weights on top of the sewing pattern piece then cutting around it using a rotary cutter. It’s simple to do, and without having to put in and remove all those pins it makes the often laborious cutting out process a lot faster. PROPER PLACEMENT It’s easier to make small adjustments to the pattern placement if you use pattern weights rather than pins. After pinning a pattern, you might find that it has shifted a little and doesn’t fit or has moved off the straight grain, so you have to take out every single pin and start again. YOU WILL NEED • Ponte or sweatshirt fabric: 150cm (60in) width x 2m (2¼yds)• Measuring tape• Basic sewing kit FABRIC USED Ponte roma jersey in soft truffle from www.dragonflyfabrics.co.uk NOTE • Use a 1cm (3/8in) seam allowance unless otherwise stated. This relaxed, oversized poncho is a quick make and a stylish antidote for chillier temperatures.” CUTTING OUT THE MAIN PONCHO Step one Fold the fabric in half selvedge to selvedge with right sides (RS) together. Step two From the folded edge, mark out and cut a rectangle 56cm (22in) wide x 84cm (33in) long. This needs to be cut on the cross grain in order to reserve sufficient fabric for the bands later on. YOU WILL NEED • 1 T-shirt: one or two sizes bigger than you usually wear• Twill tape: to match your T-shirt, 2m (2¼yds)• Cord: to match your T-shirt, 3m (3¼yds)• 5mm (¼in) eyelets and washers• Eyelet punch tool• Hammer• Basic sewing kit CUTTING THE T-SHIRT Step one Lay your T-shirt down flat and cut from sleeve to sleeve and trim off the neckline as you go. Follow the line of the neck rather than cutting straight. STITCHING THE TAPE IN PLACE Step one Pin the twill tape along the raw edge on the outside of the T-shirt front.
