WANT MY JOB? YOU CAN HAVE IT — SORT OF We are on the hunt for an Editor at Large, Marine, to take the helm of the good ship Trade-a-Boat. I’ll still be here, but less hands-on with the content selection and main features. We need someone else to do that so I can step deeper into a role I have been juggling for the last couple of years — content direction for all of Emprise’s titles. The role will require someone to lead the content planning, take ownership of the major features such as reviews etc., and to represent the masthead within the industry at shows, new-release events, and the like. Breaking down the above, the ideal candidate will have publishing experience and be known and active in the marine industry.…

seadogs of yore

Upon hearing the name Herman Melville, it’s unlikely his seafaring years will be the first of his elbow-length list of achievements that will leap to mind. Despite making his indelible mark in the world of literature as an author, Melville in fact spent a considerable amount of time at sea — and this time was drawn upon extensively to pen some of his most well-known and impactful novels. Born in 1819 in New York City, Melville was the son of an affluent merchant family. After a couple of stints as a clerk and schoolteacher, he started working aboard ships as a ‘greenhand.’ The first of these was a merchant ship bound for Liverpool from New York, and his experiences on this voyage would much later underpin his fourth novel Redburn: His…

sustainability is key for recovery of cruises

Sustainability is an aspiration within the cruise industry but there are challenges in implementing it, argues Grant Holmes, Inchcape Shipping Services Global Sector Head for the Cruise Industry. With over 16 years’ experience in the cruise industry in roles such as Director of Operations at First Choice Cruises and Festival Cruises Director of global shore excursions, destination services, tour operations and on-board revenue, Grant Holmes has seen firsthand many of the challenges facing the cruise industry as it seeks to become more sustainable. He argues that the cruise industry has exploded in recent years and in some ways has become a victim of its own success. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus on marketing the same established destinations to guests became too much in some instances, leading to over-tourism. Overcrowding is…

The innovative Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System (IPS) has brought Riviera’s yachts extended cruising range, higher cruise speed, lower fuel consumption, lower noise levels, the Dynamic Positioning System maintaining a yacht’s location at idle, and the convenience of joystick docking that has made boating so much easier — particularly manoeuvring in close quarters. “Volvo Penta is proud of its continued partnership with Riviera and we congratulate the company on the milestone they have achieved with the IPS system,” said Martin Skoglund, head of Volvo Penta Oceania. “With 2200 units now being enjoyed by Riviera yacht owners around the world, this represents a significant portion of the 30,000 Volvo Penta IPS systems we have delivered globally since…
