IT’S NOT OFTEN you can describe an Aston Martin as being controversial, yet this issue of Vantage features not one but two models to which that adjective can be readily applied (three if you include the DB6 with prototype electric power developed by Works). The first of these contentious cars is the DBX. AML’s first SUV, this fivedoor 4x4 is anathema to the purist’s view of what an Aston should be. The Cayenne drew similar flak from oldschool Porsche loyalists, but just as those diehards came to appreciate that its success gave Porsche more capital to re-invest in sports cars and motorsport, so Aston will be hoping the DBX underpins its future plans by winning new customers at home and in lucrative developing markets. THE DEVELOPMENT OF Aston Martin’s first SUV – now officially confirmed as the DBX – is progressing apace, with the first development prototype being put through its paces on a demanding welsh rally stage in the hands of Aston Martin’s chief engineer, Matt Becker. while wearing substantial body cladding and a disruptive livery to disguise its design, the five-door SUV’s first run was a symbolic step towards the launch of what Aston Martin Lagonda CeO Andy Palmer describes as one of the most important models since founders Bamford and Martin built their first car at Henniker Mews more than a century ago. we DOn’t USUALLY get terribly excited by the announcement of a new ‘special edition’, but when one combines Aston Martin’s single finest sporting achievement with the newest and most impressive car in the range, it’s hard not to be enthused. Announced in advance of the 60th anniversary of Aston Martin’s historic – and so far only – outright win at the Le Mans 24 Hours, the DBS 59 is the latest in a line of limited-run cars commissioned from Q by Aston Martin by the dealership Aston Martin Cambridge. Based on the 715bhp, 211mph DBS Superleggera, just 24 of the cars will be made. power boost for ’50s astons

SPeCiALiSt Aston Service Dorset has used original factory drawings to remanufacture the water-heated inlet manifold from the DBD ‘Special Series’ engine, as originally offered as a performance upgrade on late-50s Astons. the DBD upgrade comprised the special cast manifold and three SU H6 carburettors. the set-up was developed for the DB2/4 Mkiii and was said to give better torque characteristics than the earlier, track-oriented ‘Special Series’ engines, making it ideal for fast road use. A total of 47 cars were factory-fitted with the DBD option in period. Aston Service Dorset has re-made an exact ‘toolroom copy’ of the manifold to the original drawings, which the company owns. it’s been a momentous few months for the factory aston martin racing squad and its assorted customer teams. with the british Gt Championship coming to its conclusion, the world endurance Championship (weC) continuing its 2018/19 ‘super season’ that finishes at Le mans next June, and a host of other big endurance races around the world, the action – and success – has been non-stop. starting closest to home, optimum motorsport’s Jonny adam and Flick Haigh secured the british Gt Championship Gt3 Drivers’ title having fought a fierce campaign in their V12 Vantage Gt3. both adam and Haigh made history: the former for winning his third outright bGt Drivers’ title in four years and all in V12 Vantages; the latter for being the first female outright bGt Drivers’ title holder. underlining the V12…

the Vulcan famously made its race debut at this summer’s le mans festival, but of equal note was its club racing debut in september’s amoc meeting at snetterton. Driven by Gleb stepanov and stephen tomkins, it fully lived up to expectations, providing a wonderful spectacle while converting pole position into a convincing race win. in the Gt race going on behind the thunderous Vulcan were four Vantage Gt4s vying for class honours. chris murphy came out on top to win the class and take 4th overall, with robin marriott not far behind at the end of this 50-minute mini-endurance race. until the 1960s, a lot of racing was run to a handicap formula and the Pre war challenge honoured this old-school approach, where part of the fun is waiting to see if…
