welcome

Well, 2020 is almost over and I’m sure most of us will be glad to see the back of it. As I write this, we are deep into the second lockdown of the year, hopefully by the time you read it, we will be out the other side and with stories of a vaccine, the future may just be a little brighter. In the VW world in general the story is very much one of a curate’s egg, good in parts. The events have pretty much all gone by the board this year, and that means less fun for us and financial hardship for event organisers. However, if you turn over a few pages to our Bus Brief section we do have some exciting news for you. The paradox is that…

bus of the year

We asked some of our regular contributors and a special guest, to select their favourite bus of the year. We told them to choose the bus that stopped them in their tracks over the past twelve months, what really grabbed them in 2020. What we’d like you to do is choose your favourite from these, then vote by either visiting www.vwbusmagazine.com/vote or going to our Facebook page and following the link. The voting closes on 24th January. We will tot up the votes submitted and the winner will be announced in issue 106. Happy voting! NAME: Alan Hayward ROLE: Editor CHOICE: Issue 100 James Sharp EXPLANATION: Well, as the owner of a Karmann Colorado myself I couldn’t really choose anything else. one step forward…

As you will see another phrase that suits Marcus and this build would be ‘Dedicated to the cause’. He bought the van, a diesel panel van of 2011 vintage in ‘reasonable’ condition, a few years back as a works van. But as is often the way, plans changed as the altitude lowered. Originally white, the bus has been through many stages to get to where it is today. Usually with stories like this you can point to two, three and occasionally four iterations of the same vehicle, but it isn’t like this here. The story is one of constant evolution, sometimes barely imperceptible to the naked eye, but Marcus knows, and that’s the point. Sure, he likes to show the bus, but that isn’t what motivates him, maybe it’s when he…

story’s story

With little idea of the language, currency, costs, and the legalities of overnight free parking, we naively made our way over the Italian/Slovenian boarder and into Slovenia’s stunning Triglav National Park. After consulting the trusty Park4night we had religiously been using during the trip, we instantly got the sense that parking for free in rural Slovenia was a strict no go, unless you wanted the local constabulary to move you on at 4am and slap you with a hefty fine. Our first destination was the pristine lake Bohinj; less populated than the neighbouring Lake Bled and, in our opinion, the nicest. Don’t get me wrong, it was busy in August, but you still kept a sense that you were in the middle of the mountains and not some tourist trap. After…

flamingo a go go

So says Sammy Eddy, artist, freethinker and proprietor of Two Kissing Fish, more on which later. Back in the practical world of 2015 Sammy needed a vehicle that could carry her children, her husband and the stock for her business. This 1991 T4 panel van fitted the bill perfectly. At point of purchase it was red with faded signwriting, but Sammy could see the future and it was far from the tired looking van in front of her. Inside there was a basic rock & roll bed, but the rest was bare. Sammy admits, “I fell in love with her age and she had super low mileage. I wasn’t aware of any overheating problems at that point, I was a total van newbie”. Six months into ownership the T4 had a…
