now is the time

Late last night, as we were on deadline for this issue, we were looking through the pages as we were finalizing them with the printer and a thought entered our mind—what a wonderful time it is for the Western art market! And, of course, how wonderful it is for us to get to be a part of it. While I know things have changed over the years, take a look at what is happening now—we are blessed with such a large group of up-and-coming artists who are really at the peak of their game right now, doing some of the best work of their careers. People like Mark Maggiori, Glenn Dean, Brett Allen Johnson, Kyle Sims, Jason Rich, Jeremy Lipking, Josh Elliott, Amery Bohling, Logan Maxwell Hagege, Kyle Polzin, G. Russell…

a guiding light

A champion of the arts, Anne Marion had a long reach across genres and styles of American art, including art of the West. She was the founder of Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, a longtime supporter of the Cowboy Artists of America, and served on boards at the Museum of Modern Art, the Kimbell Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. She also owned ranches, including the famous 6666 Ranch in Texas. Marion died February 12 at the age of 81. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Marion was exposed to a Western lifestyle—ranches, cattle and horses—that would follow her around much of her life. The oil and ranching heiress, who was once listed on Forbes’ list of the 400 richest Americans, frequently turned her vast wealth toward the arts, most…

Strip down the various expansions and upgrades at Sthe Gilcrease Museum and you end up with one building built in 1913 and four layers of renovation that occurred between 1940 and 1987. A recent exhaustive analysis of the site in Tulsa, Oklahoma, determined that another expansion or another renovation would not be enough to meet the growing needs for the museum. But an entire new facility would. The Gilcrease Museum has announced it plans to build a new museum facility to house and exhibit the 350,000 objects related to the art, history and culture of North America. The project will begin with a two-year initial design phase, during which the museum will remain open, and then a two-year construction phase that will necessitate the closure of the museum, though the collection…

art history

When Howard Post, the famous Western Wpainter, was around 4 years old his family moved into a house near the Catalina Foothills in northern Tucson, Arizona. It was there he learned to ride horses, raise cattle and where his interest in art took hold. Now, decades later, the home is once again filled with art as the headquarters for SculptureTucson. The home, now known as the historic Post House, was built in the 1940s. The Post family moved into it in the early 1950s. Howard Post’s parents lived in it until they passed away in the 1990s, after which Howard’s brother lived in it with his family for a decade. The property was eventually sold to Pima County, who turned it into Brandi Fenton Memorial Park. “We needed a headquarters so we’re…
