ios 13: on a whole new level

In one of the iPhone’s biggest updates to date, iOS 13 revolutionizes the smartphone once again. It’s jam-packed with a bunch of improvements including a systemwide Dark Mode, the Find My app, performance enhancements all-new Photos and Reminders apps, and major privacy features. This week, we go hands-on with the beta ahead of its public release… FASTER THAN EVER It wouldn’t be an iOS release without a few performance improvements and iOS 13 is no exception. Indeed, the operating system is faster and smoother than ever before on both new and older devices, with the iPhone 6S and above compatible with the release. Official benchmarks suggest that Face ID unlocks devices up to 30 percent faster than on iOS 12, and many apps now launch up to twice as fast as they’ve…

millennial money: credit unions add flex to your finances

An underused money tool that could help a new generation of adults on their path to prosperity isn’t a smartphone app, a virtual currency or a digital payment system. It’s an old-timey credit union. Credit unions, if you’re unfamiliar, are like nonprofit banks. They may not satisfy all your money-management needs, but you’re missing out if you’re ignoring credit unions, which have great interest rates on auto loans, consumer-friendly checking and savings accounts, and low ongoing credit card rates. One example: Fully financing a $30,000 new car over five years would cost about $1,250 less in interest with a credit union auto loan compared with a bank auto loan, based on national average rates. Competitors — megabanks, small community banks and online banks — have their strengths and weaknesses. But this isn’t a binary…

us officials say key rail safety technology 90% complete

The railroad industry has installed safety technology on nearly 90% of tracks where it is required, federal officials said, but “significant work” is needed to ensure the technology is completely installed by a December 2020 deadline. Federal Railroad Administration chief Ronald Batory told a Senate committee that technology known as positive train control, or PTC, is in operation on more than 50,000 route miles (80,000 kilometers) of the nearly 58,000 miles (93,000 kilometers) where it is required. The GPSbased technology is intended to prevent deadly crashes by automatically stopping or slowing a train before a collision or derailment. Congress required in 2008 that railroads adopt PTC and gave them seven years to do the job. When it became clear that wasn’t enough, Congress extended the deadline through 2018 and again through…

what is the online forum 8chan?

An anonymous online forum called 8chan has drawn attention in the wake of mass shootings in Texas and Ohio because violent U.S. extremists have used it to share tips and encourage one another. The site suffered sporadic outages Monday after its cybersecurity provider cut off support for what it called a “cesspool of hate.” WHAT IS 8CHAN? The online message board dates back to 2013. Under the banner of free speech, it allows users to post graphic and extremist content and doesn’t censor posts. The site has been linked to violent extremists. Police are investigating commentary posted on 8chan believed to have been written by the suspect in a shooting Saturday that killed 22 people in El Paso, Texas. If there is a connection, it would be the third known instance of a shooter…

no, there’s still no link between video games and violence

Do video games trigger violent behavior? Scientific studies have found no link. But the persistent theory is back in the headlines following Saturday’s mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. An online manifesto thought to be authored by the gunman briefly mentioned the combat game Call of Duty. Then President Donald Trump weighed in, charging this week that “gruesome and grisly video games” contribute to a “glorification of violence.” Trump’s statements were more reserved compared with his last brush with the subject in 2018, when he called video games “vicious” and summoned game-industry executives to meet at the White House, to little lasting effect. The Entertainment Software Association, the biggest video game trade group, reiterated its position that there is no causal connection between video games and violence. “More than 165 million Americans enjoy video…

amazon’s self-driving delivery robots head to california

Amazon’s self-driving robots will be roaming the streets of another neighborhood. The online shopping giant said Tuesday that the six-wheeled robots, about the size of a smaller cooler, will begin delivering packages to customers in Irvine, California. It comes after Amazon began testing them in a suburb of Seattle at the beginning of the year. Amazon said the robots, which are light blue and have the Amazon smile logo stamped on its sides, are able to avoid crashing into trash cans or pedestrians. Still, a worker will accompany the robots at first. Other companies have been testing similar delivery robots on college campuses, delivering burgers or soda to students. Amazon said its robots, which it calls Scout, will be delivering orders to doorsteps Monday to Friday and only during the day.…
