editor’s note

A few years ago, my mother inherited an antique walnut sideboard from a relative. It was an exquisite piece of furniture, with a curved front and beautiful detailing. My mother was grateful, but also a little uncertain of what to do with it. Her cottage-style home was filled with light furnishings and fabrics, white painted furniture, and soft patterns. An ornate piece of furniture surely wouldn’t fit in. But then the sideboard arrived, wrapped in layers of plastic—and memories. My mom positioned it in a glorified spot in her dining room so guests could see it the minute they walked in. Its rich finish stood in stark contrast to the bright and airy space that surrounded it—a stranger in a room full of familiar things. And yet, it was perfect. My mom…

character study

From a little bit weepy to laugh-out-loud funny, there’s a story behind every object in Joel and Courtney Warren’s Waxahachie, Texas, cottage. That’s because Courtney has an eye for the unusual (she’s an interior designer with a bargainhunting streak). Take her collection of church memorabilia, inspired by Joel’s work as a pastor. It began with vintage hymnals and has grown to include a stained-glass window, an old church “welcome” sign with dates and times of services, and—her greatest triumph—a church board, which once recorded weekly attendance and offerings. Courtney searched for a board for five years and finally found a man willing to sell one in Houston (200 long miles away). He refused to ship it, but Courtney was undeterred. “Over the course of weeks, I think I wore him down,” she says.…

modern country

Early morning sunshine fills Courtney Yezerski’s music room with a warm glow that beckons to the mom of three boys. “On a good day, that’s where I like to go and have my coffee before the boys, or my ‘tiny tornadoes’ as I call them, get up,” Courtney says. “Sometimes I’ll just look at the bookshelves and daydream, or I’ll look at the old portrait photographs on the wall and ponder what their lives were like.” This reverence for quiet simplicity spills out of the antiques-filled music room, across the whitewashed oak f loors, and throughout the three-year-old house Courtney and her husband, John Eric, created with architect Preston Shea in Franklin, Tennessee. Aged ceiling beams; tall, woodcased double-hung windows; and thick, blunt-edge molding give the house a sense of history that…

sentimental patina

For Lucy Rose and Kyle Conklin, moving from city to country in Colorado wasn’t a matter of getting more for their money. It was about acquiring something intangible—pure and simple. “There’s a freedom and innocence that comes with country life,” Lucy Rose says. “We’re homebodies with a love for nature, and we wanted our four children to grow up getting their hands dirty and exploring the land. In Castle Rock, we are less than an hour from Denver, but the slow pace and natural scenery make the city feel a million miles away.” It was important to the Conklins that their new home complement the 38 acres that surround it, so they modeled the design after a traditional farmstead but twisted the interior footprint to accommodate more modern-day ideas about family living.…

cabin fervor

Tamara Bailey knows that curiosity often gets the best of her—though usually in a good way. Six years ago duringa snowy stay in a small cabin rental, she cozied up with a book she saw on the coffee table and became fascinated with A-frames, the triangular vacation homes popularized in the 1950s—and the style of her rental. “Because I’m cursed with imagining what could be in every place that I go, my mind was full of possibilities for the cabin,” Tamara says. “I went home, ordered the same book, and knew someday I would find my own A-frame.” That “someday” came three years ago, when she and her husband, Ron, bought a 1964 A-frame in the mountain town of Big Bear City, California. The design-savvy couple (she’s creative director of an…
