call of the desert

You never forget your first time travelling Namibia. My first visit to our neighbour to the north was many years ago when I was still in Grade 7 (or Standard 5 as it was known back then). The big adventure took place during the June school holidays – a great time to visit Nam, as the desert is not unbearably hot, but the weather is still a welcome escape from the winter in the Cape. We were four families travelling together, each with two or three children. As with any travel adventure, the three-week long journey left us all with incredible memories. Thinking back on that first trip to Namibia, I found that it’s not just the incredible sights that have stuck with me all these years. In a big way, it’s the unique…

around the campfire

GENERATIONS OF CAMPING It was with great interest that we read your editorials in the May and June magazines about the benefits for children who are introduced to camping and outdoor activities at a young age. My brother and I, and our friends, grew up in Bergvliet when it was first developed, and we spent many happy hours camping in the nearby forests and on the Cape Peninsula’s mountains in the 50s and 60s (we were allowed to in those days). We then also introduced our three children to caravanning, camping and hiking at very young ages. Our 1983 Jurgens Magnificent was ‘retired’ to the farm Driehoek in the Cederberg in 1990, and our families still enjoy our lovely private campsite on the farm. Fortunately for us all, our children and their respective spouses have…

NO CHILDREN ALLOWED AT THE CAMPSITE? We received quite a response to recent stories and our editor's letters about children and camping. Most of the comments were readers agreeing on how good the outdoors is for kids, or sharing memories of themselves camping in their youth. But there was one reader who also told us how shocked he was to read about resorts that do not allow persons under the age of 18. We want to know how you feel about resorts that do not allow children – would you support such a campsite, do you think there needs to be more of them, would you never visit such a place, or do you just not care? Comments Caroline Marais Louw And how can there be future nature lovers and campers without teaching children from a small…
