From the smallest suppliers to the biggest series, a broad range of businesses have been grappling with hitherto unprecedented challenges – many of which could still turn out to be existential. The cars brought together for the 2020 Poltu Quatu Classic would be impressive at the best of times, let alone when Europe tentatively steps out of lockdown. Consider the overall concours winner on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia from 10-12 July: the unmistakable purple-and-green psychedelic Porsche 917 Langheck driven by Gérard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen to second at Le Mans in 1970. Six Alfa Romeo 6C-2500 SS Villa d’Este Coupés returned to their spiritual home on 27 June for the ninth edition of Villa d’Este Style on the banks of Lake Como. The exclusive gathering at the hotel that gave the car its name began in 2012, when it purchased its own metallic-grey car to commemorate the link that began when the model won the 1949 Concorso d’Eleganza. Each year owners gather to enjoy the views, company and hospitality, and to celebrate the rare machine. Just 31 Villa d’Este Coupés are believed to have been made by Alfa Romeo from 1949, with Superleggera berlinetta bodies by Touring, along with five cabriolets.
