A software modular synthesiser represents the ultimate in raw sound design power. Starting from an empty rack, you combine any number of oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs and effects, then grab a fistful of virtual patch cables and plug them all together in any configuration you like. It’s Lego for synth geeks, essentially. “The ultimate in raw sound design power” As you can imagine, this power is both a blessing and a curse. Accomplished sound designers can let their imaginations run wild and dive headfirst down the rabbit hole of patching and tweaking, but a synth newbie can quickly get stuck without making a single noise. But overcome this learning curve and not only will you end up with tons of unique sounds that other synths couldn’t possibly make, but you’ll unlock the underlying…

iZotope Ozone 9 New balancing and bass enhancement features, and a whole lot more This year’s update to iZotope’s self-contained mastering plugin introduces a couple of new modules to the already well-stocked roster, and further beefs up many of the software’s existing capabilities. The two headlines are the Low End Focus and Master Rebalance modules. An ‘industry-first bass-shaping tool”, Low End Focus enables tightening up of low-frequency presence, with a Punch setting for transient-heavy sources (kick drums) and a Smooth mode for basses, synths, etc. Master Rebalance, meanwhile, performs the miraculous feat of boosting or lowering the vocals, bass or drums in a full mix, using some kind of equalisation voodoo, via a single slider. Ozone’s machine learning-driven Master Assistant – which sets up a full preset for you based upon analysis of the…

cm Tell us how Unfiltered started. MH “I started it with my colleagues Joshua Dickinson and Ryan Michael McGee. We were all grad students at UC Santa Barbara, where we learned most of the skills required for creating plugins. Writing plugins was something that I had wanted to do since school, but always worried I couldn’t, without an engineering background. The company is now just Josh and I.” cm What sets your new synth, Lion, apart from the pack, as it were? MH “Lion is a lot more streamlined than most synths. We stripped out a lot of features that we think slow people down, and instead focused on creating the widest array of sounds with the fewest possible controls. A lot of modern instruments are designed more as preset pack platforms instead…

computer music 10 years back

We were all about the mobile music-making in 146 (December 2009) as we explained how to make tunes on a variety of portable devices. Most are probably now languishing in cupboards – we’re looking at you netbook, PSP Vita, Windows Mobile and Palm OS handhelds and the original Nintendo DS – but the iPhone continues to be a great take-anywhere production platform… albeit an increasingly expensive one. “We got through an entire mastering feature without calling it a ‘dark art’” Elsewhere, we managed to get through an entire feature on mastering without calling it a ‘dark art’, though we did flirt with cliché by saying that the process is surrounded by “myth and mystery” (which is surprising, given how much is written about it). We also reviewed the very first version of…
