What makes a house a home? In short: family. Growing up on the East Coast I can attest to this: From childhood summers spent by the water with cousins and friends to evenings in the kitchen with my parents as a young adult getting crash courses in spaghetti Bolognese and mac ’n cheese (an attempt to keep me from starving as an English major in Cape Town), my family home will always stick in my mind as the perfect backdrop to moments both quiet and convivial with those who matter to me most. As the year’s denouement begins to roll out and we start finding ourselves planning more quality time with loved ones, it only makes sense that this issue is all about the homes that celebrate the best of family living…

‘I love the idea of creating a shape through a method of reduction, rather than the use of a mould, because it brings out the honest nature of concrete,’ says Ross Robertson, founder of design studio Oliver Whyte. ‘I want to see the imperfections and blemishes, that is where the beauty lies.’ For his debut collection, ‘Core’, Ross explores the humble beauty of concrete, a material which itself has seen a soaring resurgence in popularity this year. Rendered in a Brutalist terrazzo, his five-piece collection perfectly expresses both the permanence and complexity of this simple material. oliverwhytestudio.com…

1 Traditional florals meet bold geometrics in Nanimarquina’s Oaxaca range of outdoor rugs – just like that, your verandah got a whole lot more stylish. cremadesign.co.za 2 Inspired by the legacy of its namesake, Gabrielle Chanel Essence is a bold new take on a classic scent and features notes of tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and orange blossom. chanel.com 3 Coinciding with the brand’s 30th anniversary, Cécile and Boyd has released Cécile, a memoir of its cofounder. Original, courageous and unfailingly stylish, the life of Cécile Tilley is a must-read. cecileandboyds.com 4 Seemingly charged with kinetic energy, the colossal sculptures in David Brits’ latest series, Ouroboros, are loaded with contradictions; at once both weightless and solid, simple and complex. davidbrits.com 5 Under his Pinda Interior Design brand, Durban-based designer Siyanda Mbele has released a range of…

Adene’s Farm Flowers Adene Nieuwoudt ‘I love the challenge of growing unconventional flower varieties that aren’t traditionally cultivated in South Africa. Witnessing a variety I have never seen before begin to flower, having planted and nurtured it from seed, takes the cake,’ says Adene Nieuwoudt. Since swapping her heels as a fashion buyer in London and Cape Town for gumboots and a flower farm in Wolseley, Adene has been cultivating flowers with fashion industry sensibility. Nestled in the Breede River Valley region of the Western Cape, the flower farm is now home to a passionate team dedicated to producing astonishing varieties of fresh-cut flowers and foliage. Now in year four, her designer varieties such as dinner-plate dahlias (named so for literally being the size of one); chocolate hued lace flowers, hot-pink, pom-pom…

Light-headed Bathroom lights should range in warmth between 2 700K and 3 000K, as colder hues are unflattering, especially above mirrors. Opt for a hard-working bulb that has an output of at least 75 watts, or a fluorescent alternative that produces 24 watts. Drama, darling Once relegated to a corner in most bathrooms, the under-designed shower has received an attractive update, thanks to a water-conscious design trend that is currently informing homes. Bathroom walls are the best place to make a statement and maximise visual depth. Bring the bling When it comes to bathroom fixtures, the material should always be your first consideration. Brass, nickel and bronze are staples as they take to moisture, and handle well over time. Avoid metals that oxidise quickly, such as iron. Stick to using one dominant metal in the…
