FALL FEELS LIKE NESTING TIME FOR MANY, INCLUDING Holly Blain. In her Brooklyn, Michigan, house, every September starts with this ritual. “First, I clear out and take down all the summer stuff, so I’m starting with a clean slate,” she says, “then I shop my basement.” Holly’s basement functions as something of an antiques booth, stowing the inventory of collectibles she’s built up over her past six years as a homeowner. Some of it she sells on eBay; some of it she bequeaths to friends or family; most of it she keeps for herself to rotate into her rooms as needed. FOR HIS OWN KITCHEN IN THE Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, interior designer Sean Lewis tried five different shades of gray-green before turning to an old favorite. “I ended up going with my sixth choice, one I had used in another house, because I knew it worked,” he says. And that was just for the trim. Sean’s color combinations change from kitchen to kitchen, but his application remains consistent: two to three colors for cabinetry, trim, and shelves; white on the walls. He chose this mix of greens and golds to bring warm personality to the kitchen in the 1920s stone house he shares with husband Geoffrey O’Donnell. At Bryarton Farm, a restoration is underway. “To restore means to honor the original family with every choice you make,” Sara Jo says, with a smile that underscores the passion and purpose in her voice. “We are committed to making this farmhouse comfortable and functional for our family while always respecting the previous families who called this farmstead home since 1872.” Although both members of the young couple hail from small hobby farms—his in Georgia, hers in Oklahoma—they didn’t set out to restore a Folk Victorian house and its homestead in rural Kansas.
