This is probably my favourite time of year; not just because it’s my birthday soon, and the leaves are turning amber and ochre, but because there are so many fabulous new cruise itineraries to choose from. On page 26 you can see the hot destinations for the year ahead, while on page 94 we’ve selected some of the coolest adventure cruises to take you off the beaten track; personally I’d love to go to Egypt next year – I’ve always fancied sailing along the Nile wearing a white dress, holding a parasol. Blame it on Agatha Christie. In these uncertain times we all need something to dream about, right? If you’re looking for further inspiration for your own cruise wishlist then on page 106 you can read about a Danube river…

plitvice lakes national park, croatia

Hidden amid this luscious forest are 16 crystalline lakes tumbling into each other via a series of rumbling waterfalls, with the mineral-rich water depositing tufa in ever-changing formations. Despite being the largest and oldest national park in Croatia and a UNESCO Heritage Site since 1979, the beauty spot — located between the capital Zagreb and Zadar on the coast — remains a relatively undiscovered destination. Eighteen kilometres of wooden foot bridges and pathways make it easy to explore on foot, but there’s also free boats and buses to take advantage of. Great to visit at any time of year, autumn is particularly special as the leaves take on their fiery fall hues. >> Turn to page 26 to see some of the hottest destinations for 2020…

DAME HELEN CHRISTENS SCENIC ECLIPSE Godmother Dame Helen Mirren was welcomed on board Scenic Eclipse, the newest ship from Scenic, for its official christening in New York last month. “I was thrilled to be invited to take on the role of Scenic Eclipse godmother, even more so now I have stepped on board and seen the level of design and technology that have gone into her creation,” said Dame Helen, who sat in the onboard helicopter. “She is an exceptional cruising experience, and I’m honoured to have christened her. I wish the crew and guests many years of sailing adventures and discovery.” Joined by her husband, director Taylor Hackford, the award-winning actress christened the ship dockside by breaking the ceremonial bottle of Champagne against the hull and bestowing the traditional blessing of safekeeping over…

ON THE LOOK OUT If you’re going on an expedition cruise (see feature page 94) then binoculars are an absolute must; some expedition cruise lines provide them but it’s always handy to have your own, and it’s definitely worth the investment if you’re planning a lot of adventure travel. The CL Pocket binoculars are foldable, compact, and you can even use them with eyewear (from £590, swarovskioptik.com). Wild things Animal print continues to be a big trend this autumn/winter but if you want to avoid looking like Cruella de Vil remember less is usually more (clockwise, from top left: Sarah Smart daytime leather belt, £22, johnlewis.com; Betty Barclay leopard print faux fur outdoor jacket, £230, bettybarclay.com; splurge: The Falabella tiny bag by Stella McCartney, £545, net-a-porter.com; flats, £49.99, zara.com; steal: Elottie small bucket…
