welcome

We’re well into winter, which is the perfect excuse – not that we need one – to hunker down for some serious television viewing. And, of course, Foxtel has a host of programming to keep you entertained, from acclaimed original drama Lambs of God to a new series of Grand Designs Australia and the best sport contests in the world. It’s also the school holidays so, if you have little ones to amuse, there’s the always-fun SLIME CUP, not to mention the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants to celebrate. For those with an inquisitive mind, a full month of programming shines a spotlight on the moon landing, which changed the course of history 50 years ago this month. There are fascinating documentaries and engrossing movies to mark this incredible achievement. With the return…

in the know

SNEAK PEEK Mirren THE GREAT The star returns to familiar territory as one of the most revered royal leaders in history Helen Mirren is no stranger to royalty. In 2005 she stepped into the shoes of Elizabeth I in the miniseries of the same name, while two years later, she picked up an Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in critically acclaimed film The Queen. In 2019, she re-teams with Elizabeth I writer Nigel Williams for Catherine the Great, portraying the all-powerful empress – born Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst – who reigned supreme in Russia during the 18th century, making her the longest-ruling female monarch in the country’s history. With authenticity of great importance, no expense was spared on the lavish production, with filming taking place in some of the most picturesque…

in my opinion

FOX SPORTS’ Yvonne Sampson might never have found her dream job if it wasn’t for some wise words (to herself) “Working in media, a lot of people have opinions on what they think you’re good at. When I first started in journalism, I had news directors tell me that women in sport will never be ‘a thing’ and maybe I should try weather. But I always knew what I loved and rugby league felt authentic to me. Going with my instinct was the best advice I ever got and it came from me. I knew that if I worked hard enough, an opportunity would present itself. I remember my first broadcast ever for Wide World of Sports was a Gold Coast Titans game. I was so nervous. Peter Sterling was beside me and…

question time

Bernard Curry The TV WEEK Logie-nominated Wentworth star can’t get enough high-quality local drama – so much so that he even participates in his own Teal Tuesdays! My current Foxtel obsession is… I’m really looking forward to seeing Lambs of God. I think it’s going to be a great piece of TV. The trailer is just incredible and I have a couple of friends who are in it as well, like Damon Herriman. Everything about it just looks really weird, but completely gripping. When I watch TV I must have… My wife Sonya and I have this thing called ‘fruits’, where whenever we purposely sit down to watch a TV show, I have to make chopped-up fruit and nuts and some chocolate with some low-fat yoghurt. My dream evening of television would include… Westworld,…

hell hath no fury

The wind is howling and it’s bitterly cold when Foxtel magazine arrives on the Blue Mountains set of Foxtel Original drama Lambs of God. Within minutes, the heavens have opened, which only adds to the eeriness. While the crew frantically erects extra tents to protect equipment, the cast soldiers on, filming a poignant scene from episode two. “Now you’ve had the full experience!” declares series writer Sarah Lambert, to which executive producer Jason Stephens adds: “It’s atmosphere! Why would we pay for rain when it’s free?” Deep in the heart of Mount Wilson – the same location where much of The Great Gatsby was filmed – we find the most magnificent, perfectly aged monastery ruins, complete with lush gardens overflowing with real vegetables ripe for the picking. It’s almost impossible to tell…
