the sound of perfection

The first professional golf tournament I went to was at Wentworth in the late ‘80s, but I have to be honest and say I can't remember whether it was the PGA Championship in May or the World Match Play in October. I was just getting into the game, and went with some friends with the intention of seeing some of our new heroes – Seve, Faldo, Lyle and Woosie. I'd been encouraged to go by my uncle, who was the person who got me into golf. He gave me one bit of advice: “Make sure you go and watch the pros hitting balls on the practice ground. Watch the way they swing the club and (I shall always remember this) listen to the sound they make when they hit the ball.” Anyone…

Three is the magic number Wayne Riley talked about the growth and benefits of nine-hole courses in your previous issue, and it made me think of a great experience I had at a recently opened course, Gwel an Mor in Portreath, Cornwall. With golf needing to offer new experiences to entice more people into the game, this is a great facility offering The Famous 9 – nine par-3 holes replicating famous holes from around the world. It just goes to show that golf courses do not have to be 18 holes, 7,000+ yards long with super-quick greens for you to enjoy competition between friends. Like GolfSixes and other innovative ideas to bring the game to more people, this is something new and different and I definitely applaud the concept. Paul Horton, Bristol Golf starts at…

letter of the month

Something for everyone I have two sons who are both mad keen on the game and at eight and five are loving getting out and hitting a ball. During our visit to St Andrews we had many happy rounds at the Balgove course, which is part of the St Andrews Links group. What a brilliant example of a fun course. It was nine holes ranging from 100 yards to 250 yards, there wasn’t too much rough or penal bunkering, there was a relaxed dress code and it cost just £3 for each of my children to play 18 holes! It was also a real pleasure seeing the mix of golfers on the course, from men and women to children and pensioners. This type of academy course is what we need more of to…

talking point

The GM view: Langer’s remarkable career shows no signs of slowing down. He’s putting better than ever and playing supreme golf from tee to green, so it’s not unfeasible to think he could still win on the right course. However, it would be a monumental achievement. Trevor Hull: If you look at the statistics, he’s putting brilliantly, hitting loads of fairways and finding 78.3% of greens in regulation, which leads the Champions Tour and would lead the European Tour. He only averages 280 yards off the tee, though, and while that’s higher than Graeme McDowell and Soren Kjeldsen’s averages this season in Europe, the ball travels further in America. Paul Davies: Yes, definitely! I watched him in The Senior Open and he played amazing golf. Granted, some of the tees were forward,…

ROSE BY THE NUMBERS €23,752,185 Justin Rose's career earnings so far on the European Tour 8 Consecutive years in which he’s recorded at least one win It’s always hard to win once on the European Tour, but to do it back-to-back is some achievement… I'm just delighted with that. I think it's the first time I've recorded back-to-back wins on the European Tour ever. I like achieving new firsts, for sure. I knew I had a good chance. Obviously it was key to go low in the third round and get myself in contention. In the final round, the leaderboard was very condensed all day and I knew that it was going to take some type of run of birdies to break out. There were a few players who did that towards the end,…
