from the editor

nick.jwright@bauermedia.co.uk One of my first assignments as a young golf writer working for a now rival publication a couple of decades (or so) ago was to report on the experience of playing the Old Course at St Andrews. “Go up there, soak in the atmosphere, hang out in the pubs, get colour from the caddies and, whatever you do, don’t miss your tee time!” my editor told me.As briefs go, it was a pretty cool one and despite having revisited on numerous occasions since, my first two days at the Home of Golf some time in the ’90s have lingered long in the memory. One flashback stands out above all others, though. The first afternoon, I remember standing to the side of the 18th green watching a succession of groups…

can he?

If Tiger wins a major, it will be the biggest golf story of 2019. This is a man who is the greatest golfer of a generation, if not ever, and who less than 18 months ago was being written off as completely finished. The fact you can say you think he’ll win a major this year without being dismissed as a foolish zealot reflects an incredible achievement on the part of Woods – and his back surgeon – to re-establish himself as a top-drawer golfer, but it will count for little if he never adds to his tally of 14 majors. We examine the evidence to see what’s in Tiger’s favour, and what goes against him, as he attempts to secure a 15th major that would be sweeter than any…

the barometer

UP Xander Schauffele Started the final round of the Sentry ToC five shots back, but shot a course record equaling 11-under 62 to win by one, with a total of 22-under. Nicolas Colsaerts Waited 30 years for his first ace but ended the drought in impressive fashion on a 330-yard par 4 at Trump International in Dubai. Charley Hull The 22-year-old claimed her second Ladies European Tour title at the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open in Abu Dhabi. Matt Kuchar The 40-year-old picked up his second win in as many months. “To win two out of three is crazy to comprehend,” he says. DOWN Jyoti Randhawa India’s former number one golfer and former world top-100 player was arrested for poaching…

five burning questions for…

1 What helped you turn things around from 2017 into 2018? 2017 was a rough year, mentally and physically. I lost 25 pounds, give or take, through sickness. Getting the strength and the energy back, getting the mental focus and not feeling sorry for myself – it was all these things. Luckily I got better, got healthier, and now I can play golf and swing as hard as I want and have the energy to do it. It’s amazing what some good energy and healthy energy will do. Last year was outstanding. 2 You used to say you’d retire if you ever reached 10 PGA Tour wins – you now have 12. What’s the new target? My motivation is to quit before I stop winning because I…
