On March 26 Chicago prosecutors dropped charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett for allegedly staging a hate crime against himself. Smollett “was a victim who was vilified,” his lawyers said. But he’s not exonerated—and the decision sparked major controversy. The city of Chicago sent Smollett, 36, a letter seeking $130,000 to cover “overtime hours in the investigation,” and Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared, “I want accountability … for a hoax that was committed.” With Empire up for renewal at FOX, there’s been no decision yet about whether he will return if the show does. Nicolas Cage’s fourth marriage became one of the shortest in Hollywood history when the actor filed for an annulment just four days after marrying his girlfriend of a year, makeup artist Erika Koike, on March 23 in Las Vegas.
