THE STORY of the English country house in the 20th century is one of light and shade. During that period, around one in six of all those put up in the preceding 400 years was levelled. Their Edwardian heyday tipped over into an accelerating decline – two world wars, rocketing income tax and death duties; dilapidation and deathwatch beetle. The inevitable result was demolition or auction. When Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited was published in 1945, he had assumed their days were numbered. Compact, middle-sized, architecturally perfect, Worming ton Grange in Gloucestershire only narrowly escaped such a fate. ROMANTICS AND CLASSICS: STYLE IN THE ENGLISH COUNTRY HOUSE (by Jeremy Musson; Rizzoli, rrp £45) Architectural historian Jeremy Musson set off to explore 20 privately owned stately (and some not-so-stately) houses in search of the much-emulated yet elusive quality alluded to by this book’s title. Certainly, although opulent and atmospheric, all the interiors (beautifully shot by Hugo Rittson Thomas) seem to strike a delicate balance between aesthetics and quotidian practicalities.
