welcome back old friend

It took me precisely eight hours and 10 minutes from my home course reopening to hitting my first postlockdown tee shot. It wasn’t particularly brilliant – a slappy punt down the right. But it was a proper golf shot… my first since March 22. Social media was awash with golfers doing the same thing on May 13, though not everyone had a return like Ocean Tee founder Ed Sandison – who bagged his first ever ace with his very first shot in his very first game back! There is a buzz around golf that the game hasn’t had for a while. The enforced lay-off has regular players like you and me chomping at the bit to get out again. But we’ve also heard lots of stories from lapsed golfers who are picking up…

where’s the golf course, greg?

Greg Norman has put his incredible Seven Lakes Ranch in Colorado up for sale – and it’s yours for just $40 million. Dubbed a ‘sporting paradise’, the 11,900-acre hunting estate is located in the White River Valley and includes a saloon bar, 1.9 miles of private river for fishing and a 13,907 sq ft lodge with eight guest suites. There’s also a variety of cabins for additional accommodation, just in case you need it. The former World No.1 is now looking to sell the entire property after using it as a family retreat for the past two decades. Maybe he wants somewhere with its own golf course instead...…

‘you don’t need to swing it fast to hit it far’

SET-UP CHOICES I have two driving irons which I swap depending on the course set-up. They both carry about the same distance, but the 2-iron comes out flatter and is better off the tee. QUICK AND EASY When I’m warming up, I’m hitting between 25 to 30 balls in total. It only takes me about 10 minutes. I start with my sand wedge, then pitching wedge, 7-iron, 5-iron, 2-iron, 3-wood and driver and then work my way back. LIGHTER TOUCH I have a slightly softer shaft in my sand wedge and lob wedge. Because you don’t tend to hit those as far and you want them to spin a bit more, a softer shaft helps. My go-to training aid is a Visio Putting Template which I use to check my stroke arc. I also include a…
