Paul Barbera PHOTOGRAPHER AND DIRECTOR This year marks Barbera’s decade-long association with Vogue Living’s Salone del Mobile coverage. “Working with VL gives you an all-access pass to the fair, but the size of the event is overwhelming,” he says. “The team does a great job delivering a highly curated story. The hardest part is editing 6000-plus images down to 60!” This Australian native has traversed the globe for editorial and advertising work, from Melbourne and Sydney to Singapore and Amsterdam, before settling in New York, where he is now based. His own passion project, Where They Create, has produced two acclaimed books. For his second book, “I got to travel around Japan and I spent a few hours in the studio of Tadao Ando,” Barbera says. When I arrived in Sydney from Perth as a fresh-faced and utterly naïve 21-year-old, I got my first job through a family connection — designer Carla Zampatti, my grandfather’s beloved cousin. Carla was not only instrumental in nurturing my love of fashion, which led to a career in publishing, but she also welcomed me into her home and took care of me the way Italian families…

all in the family

La famiglia. It’s as much a part of brand Italia as pasta, Ferrari and Negroni. Italian clan names echo across the ages, from the embattled Renaissance nobility of Orsini, Cesarini and Medici to 20th-century royalty like Versace. Even Hollywood antiheroes like Vito Corleone and his rambunctious brood serve to reinforce the legendary stature of the family in Italian culture. Italy’s design industry is no different. While globally venerated for its rich history, ceaseless innovation and ongoing industrial vigour, its true X factor is family. It’s the roots of the genealogical trees that allow the new branches to flourish, at the same time anchoring an industry that still holds sway around the world today. By transmitting knowledge from one generation to the next, Italian brands mapped out modernism, charting a path from…
