I was pleased to see that ASG has a new replica of the fascinating Schofield revolver, wearing a silver finish and faux ivory grips. It's powered by a 12g CO2 capsule, so there are no surprises there, and it also employs the dummy cartridges that we all like. These are all realistic in terms of the size and shape, including the rim that locates the case in the chambers. Just as with the real firearm, the top strap of the frame unlocks to offer you all six chambers at once, into which you simply drop the loaded cartridges, close the frame again and you're ready to go. For three days in February, the great and good of the shooting industry descended on the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham for the biggest and best shooting show of the year to date. The super-successful British Shooting Show was on, everybody was there and of course we were there too to have a look round and see what was new. BSA First stop was at the huge and impressive BSA stand, where I was shown the brand new Scorpion TS pre-charged rifle that is the firm's new entry-level gun. It will be selling for just £569, which is fantastic value for money. Fifty yards is a long way to shoot. I'm starting to think it could be almost twice as far as 25 yards. It certainly feels like it as I trudge down the range in the drizzle to pin up my target cards. Then I turn round and trudge all the way back again, having forgotten to take anything to pin them up with. I'm giving the dark art of long-range target shooting a try. Since returning to airgunning, I haven't yet bothered with anything over 40 yards. And I'm not sure the worn-out .22 break-barrel of my teenage years could even shoot that far anyway. Back in the 1990s, I was invited by a friend to go lamping with him. I had never done this before and he lent me his Weihrauch HW95 break-barrel air rifle. Although I was unsuccessful, it was an enjoyable evening. My mate did a lot better, but I think it was possibly because he had a .22 rimfire! A seed was sown that evening and in the following weeks we had several more lamping sessions. I acquired a nice Venom-tuned Weihrauch HW77 underlever in .22 and this gun provided my family with a fair few rabbit stews.
