Eight years have passed since Texas approved the Compassionate Use Act in 2015. Which allowed the first legal use of low-THC cannabis products for patients with intractable epilepsy. This law sponsored by representative Stephanie Klick, was later amended in 2019 and 2021 to include additional conditions. Likewise, the program established the requirements to obtain a vertical-integration license to operate a dispensary and distribute medical cannabis to qualified patients. Notwithstanding the foregoing, at the time it granted only three licenses to dispensaries throughout the State of Texas, limiting the possibilities of patients and the diversity of the industry. This year, the Department of Public Health (DPS) announced that it would be receiving new applications to obtain a dispensary license, although it did not clarify exactly how many it would grant.
