As scooterists, we are obsessed with making scooters go faster, so why did the big scooter manufacturers fail to capitalise on it? The original idea behind the motor scooter was cheap, affordable, commuter transport. Small capacity but highly economical, they mobilised nations across the globe. As their popularity grew, people began travellin longer distances on them, and that is when their limited power became a disadvantage. Carrying out such activities was better suited to bigger, more powerful vehicles. Therefore, for the scooter to survive, it had to adapt, and that meant bigger, faster engines. By the beginning of the 1950s, it was clear that the Vespa and Lambretta would be the market leaders in scooter production. Yes, it’s a maxi scooter, but lovers of more traditional scoots should stop before turning the page. Aprilia’s SRGT 400 is the sporting scooter we’ve been demanding for years. When was the last time we had factory-built sports scooter?
