If you can’t decide whether you need a Camper or a Day Van, the re-styled California T6.1 Beach Camper might be just your thing. The idea behind the Beach Camper range is to offer the perfect multi-purpose vehicle, or Van in this case (MPV). Day Van by day, with various seating options available, and Camper by night, when the top is popped and the full-width rear bench transforms into a double bed. VW even throws in a mattress for added comfort. Nothing new there, you say, except in the new T6.1 revision there’s also a mini kitchen unit, cleverly built into the side panel, which stows out of sight when not in use but offers tea, coffee and dinner making opportunities when pulled out. When you think about meeting other car fanatics at a show held in the United Kingdom, I think it’s safe to say we all paint a mental picture of a serene warm sun beating down across slow motion fields of gently swaying grass, gleaming modified vehicles of every colour and shape, drink in hand and shades on. Book a campsite nearby for the Sunday night. In the past we’ve left the show on Sunday afternoon and headed straight back to the UK, absolutely knackered, so in recent years we’ve stayed one extra night, allowing us to enjoy the whole day at the show before having a shower, a decent meal and a good night’s rest prior to heading home fresh and happy on Monday morning. Just my luck. I was less than a mile from the gates of the Fab Festival in sleepy Norfolk when I slowed down to allow an oncoming lorry to pass and heard the ominous sound of screeching tyres behind, followed by a loud bang… Yep, somebody had just slid into the rear of my Karmann Gipsy Camper. As I stepped out of my Van to investigate, the first thing I saw was the other car, and my heart sank as its front end was pretty much destroyed. If we told you that the main protagonist in this story was convenience, you’d probably think we’d all lost the plot. There’s probably not a vehicle on the road more inconvenient than a T5 with 45mm clearance between terra firma and its jacking points! Rookie road trippers Hey VWt!I recently bought a ’95 T4 Camper conversion and decided to dive straight in at the deep end with a week-long tour of France with my wife for our first trip. We just booked a ferry and landed in France at 5am with no plan whatsoever, and it was quite literally the best thing we’ve ever done. While we didn’t have a plan, we had spent a few days studying a map and had worked out that a tour of Brittany would be nice. Anthony Watson, Swansea My love affair with our 2004 T5 Panel Van began 10 years ago. Over the past decade, as our family has grown, we have slowly converted the Van as finances allowed, eventually ending up with the Van you see today. She is sound deadened, insulated, ply lined and carpeted throughout and I’ve installed Altro flooring. “the first couple of beers in Spa were free” From Essex to Spa Having attended our favourite European VW event, Le Bug Show, for the best part or 20 years now, we’ve tried all the routes and had plenty of adventures along the way. When we’re pushed for time, the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais wins hands down (35 minutes journey time), while catching a ferry from Dover to Dunkirk (two hours) saves a little driving time in France. But this year, as we had more time, we opted for a P&O Ferry from Dover to Calais, which takes around 90 minutes – just enough time for breakfast and a cuppa and a nice way to break up the journey. Idon’t mind admitting I’m still astonished just how good the T5 is at eating up the miles. It seems like no time at all since the last oil and filter change, yet the service warning indicator on the dash was already reminding me it was due again. Coincidentally, I’d noticed an oily black smudge on the section of grass track I use to get to my house, so it came as no surprise that when the under tray came off it was covered in crusty old oil.
