I read recently that poetry’s subject is time, and it got me wondering about our current efforts to depict one of time’s most unfortunate arrows, climate change. Getting a visual fix on change is slippery and more so for climate change—a fragmented endeavor where we can see one aspect or another, but not all of it at once. A quick Google search of the term “sea-level rise” pops up a dozen or so interactive maps that can show the encroaching water on coastal areas over time. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Sea-Level Rise Viewer and Climate Central’s Surging Seas: Risk Finder, which is focused on not just the water, but what is threatened and how, are two of the best-known. A wave of nostalgia washed over me as I read Ignacio Bunster-Ossa’s intriguing article (“One Giant Leap,” LAM, January), for I, too, became a landscape architect by way of outer space. In 1969, I had just graduated from Cornell University with a degree in industrial design via an independent major I created myself straddling the engineering and human ecology colleges. Grumman Aerospace Corporation offered me a job and a graduate design fellowship: three days a week working as a systems analyst for the Crew Equipment Integration Unit of the Habitability Section of the Long Duration Space Mission Group, and two days a week as a master of industrial design student at the nearby Pratt Institute. In the first half of the 20th century, Rockefeller Center set new urban design standards. Its features have become New York City cultural fixtures: the Rainbow Room, the Channel Gardens, and the grand promenade leading to the massive, gilded Prometheus statue hovering above the sunken ice rink. From the outset, the landscape elevated the street experience, and occupants in the office towers above benefited from building setbacks with exquisitely groomed terrace parterres overlooking Fifth Avenue. Plans for further rooftop development, including parks and traditional parterre gardens, boxwood-framed annual flower beds, and a series of sky bridges, remained unfulfilled—until the real estate behemoth Tishman Speyer took ownership and active management of the 19-building, 22-acre Rockefeller Center in 2001, making renovations and structural upgrades before focusing on amenities for office tenants. Even with 25 years of experience practicing landscape architecture and leading GGN, Shannon Nichol, FASLA, says she finds it “terrifying” to set her sights on Columbus, Indiana. Amid historic landscape designs by Dan Kiley and Jack Curtis, and contemporary work by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates and DAVID RUBIN Land Collective, GGN is designing a college campus. There’s reason for trepidation beyond the city’s design legacy.
