IT TAKES A VILLAGE
• I had been trying to fish the No Sancocho Sailfish Shootout, hosted by Capt. David Salazar and his wife, Kristen, at Guatemala’s Casa Vieja Lodge, but magazine deadlines kept getting in the way. In November 2021, the stars finally aligned, and we put together a Marlin team to fish it: myself, senior editor Capt. Jen Copeland, publisher Natasha Lloyd and group publisher Scott Salyers. This event is based on charity and an all-around good time rather than big money. Tournament rules penalize each angler $20 for a missed sailfish bite, with an additional $50 for a marlin miss and $100 for the dreaded “zing pow.” The money helps support the local primary school in Puerto San Jose, as well as other special projects in the community.
