president’s message

With the amount of building activity at a record high in most sectors of the industry in NSW, 2017 saw a number of major opportunities for the Master Builders Association (MBA), its members and industry to make a real difference on how we attract people to the profession of building. The MBA’s focus on pre-apprenticeship courses for both new entrants and mature-age students, as well as strategies to attract, motivate and retain first-year apprentices, continued throughout 2017. New industry programs to attract more women and Aboriginal people to our industry were also undertaken. Further, in an exciting initiative between the NSW Government and MBA, the association commenced a new training pathway “from apprenticeship to bachelor degree” for a number of dedicated students. luxurious masterpiece

PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY MBA OF NSW Master Builders Association New South Wales This three-storey, six-bedroom home is an abode of epic proportions. Sitting on 1206m², it houses 10 bathrooms, a seven-car garage, seven kitchen areas, two studies, multiple lounge, dining and family rooms as well as a swimming pool, lift and cold room. Building a home of this size and detail required a large and highly competent team of consultants, who were challenged with difficult site issues throughout the process, such as narrow access to the property via a one-way street and structural challenges, with the basement being built below sea level. This required shoring, dewatering, piling and waterproofing. The home also features a number of luxurious fittings and fixtures, such as large solid-stone benchtops, some of which weighed more than 700kg, each needing…

outstanding dedication

PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY MBA OF NSW Master Builders Association New South Wales Vadim Jefremkov, Young Builder of the Year 2017, established his company Probuilt Projects in 2011, growing quickly within the building industry to create a small, service-oriented business specialising in architecturally designed custom builds and large-scale renovations. “It all began when my friend asked me to help him with his roof on the weekends,” says Vadim. “I found the early mornings and the fresh air invigorating, and the nailing/cutting rafters and working on top of the buildings interesting. I enjoyed the work so much that I decided to take on an apprenticeship as a carpenter. I soon learned and started practising all aspects of carpentry such as formwork, roof and wall framing, and fix out. By being on site from start to…
