Hello! When you daydream about meeting your baby, you probably imagine the first time you see his little face, the first time you get to hold him in your arms, and the first time you get to snuggle him quietly as he drifts off to sleep (hopefully!). And those moments are magical, no two ways about it. But there are some more occasions a little further down the line that will blow your mind too, like the first time your bundle of joy lets you know what’s going on inside his head by uttering his first word. However, did you know, your baby is born ready, willing and able to communicate with you? This issue we’ve got a brilliant 11-page special (p47) on how you and your baby can understand each…

Family matters! If you’re a mum of two (or more!), you’ll have noticed the positive effect your eldest has on her younger brother or sister. However, a new study* has found that little ones can have a big impact too! Researchers studied 452 sets of siblings between the ages of 18 and 48 months by videoing interactions in their homes and collecting questionnaires from mums. When assessing the responses, researchers found that both younger and older children’s ability to understand other people’s feelings improved as a result of their relationship. Does Christmas feel like a distant memory of lost bedtime routines and overflowing bins, or do you feel like it was just yesterday and you’re baffled we’re on the approach to spring? I think I’m a bit of both – time is weird when you’re a parent, isn’t it? I often find myself quoting, ‘the days are long but the years are short’ – that certainly feels true this month. In the past, I’ve found this time of year difficult. It’s cold and dark so early, and we’re all trying to be a lot more frugal (although a Chinese takeaway once the kids are in bed is an essential, right?!) but, brace yourselves, I’ve found something that makes me really happy, and hopefully it will you too. My new obsession…

letter of the month

Lucky us! Just over a year ago we asked our two-year-old, Kimberly, what she wanted Santa to bring her for Christmas. We didn’t expect her answer of ‘a baby’! We hadn’t yet discussed having another child, and I’d always thought we’d wait until Kimberly was a bit older. Little did I know I was already pregnant! It’s as if Kimberly predicted it. She even guessed it would be a girl. In August 2019, she got her very late Christmas present, and she has been so amazing. She loves being a big sister. Little Mollie has fitted in so well, and we feel incredibly lucky. I’m sure there will be times when they get on each other’s nerves, but, for now, it’s bliss!
