recalibration toward resilience

@Jean.Denney14 SOME OF THE BEST ADVICE I ever received was to evaluate my goals and priorities every six months, and be prepared to radically change course. This advice was meant for a dancer whose life could shift in a moment due to injury or sudden funding! And though I’ve moved from dancing to editing, I’ve kept this habit. I stop every six months to take stock of what has come along, what has dropped away, and, most importantly, what remains, but requires a bit more acceptance. I feel resilient when I’m able to stay hopeful and grounded as things change, or I’m able to increase my tolerance for the changes I simply can’t control. In my home, we have a tradition that first arrived as a holiday gift from another artist. It…

“what’s one new goal you have for this year?”

Every year, I take a few steps toward my goal of living a near-zero-waste lifestyle. This year, I plan to focus on reducing my use of petroleum products, such as plastics and fossil fuels. Generating less waste will be especially important to me as I build and prepare to move into a tiny home with my significant other within the upcoming year. — Russell One of my New Year’s goals is to make better use of my time by helping a few people who are less fortunate. I plan on spending some time each week with residents of a local assisted living facility. — Bob…

through the grapevine

Lifelong Learning I happily renew my subscription to your outstanding magazine every year right away. I don’t even wait for any last-minute discounts, because Mother Earth Living is worth every cent. Each time the latest issue arrives, whatever previously held my attention is quickly forgotten, and I immediately sit down and scan each article. It never fails that I dedicate my entire day to reading your publication. I have gardened my whole life and have been devoted to growing herbs for more than 30 years. Over those decades, I have canceled several favorite magazine subscriptions; the information was always something I had heard before. I noticed that every time I read a new issue, I would be thinking, “been there, done that” for each article, and I finally had enough of them. Mother…

CONNECT THROUGH CONVERSATION In the United States, half the population says they feel alone; more than 9 million people in the United Kingdom feel the same. Globally, feelings of disconnection and social isolation are on the rise. Apart from harming our mental and emotional well-being, these feelings affect us physically. To combat this loneliness, companies in the U.K. are implementing the Chatty Café Scheme (www.TheChattyCafeScheme.co.uk). The practice designates spaces for customers who are open for company to use and connect with others for a conversation, however long or short. BLOOD PRESSURE PATCH Health goals can sometimes be limited by adverse blood pressure, but the latest in medical technology is a wearable blood pressure (BP) patch. In tests published in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering, the ultrasound patch performed as well as clinical methods…

project sunshine

www.ProjectSunshine.org WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: We reassess our own health goals each January; why not assess the health needs of others, too? More than 3 million children are hospitalized each year in the United States, but by providing creative, recreational, and educational activities, Project Sunshine works to ensure that these kids have full childhoods regardless of their health conditions. WHAT IT DOES: ✽ Trains a network of more than 18,000 volunteers to provide companionship and meet the non-medical, social, and emotional needs of children who are ill in the U.S., Canada, China, Israel, and Kenya. ✽ Reaches 150,000 patients aged 0 to 21 each year by volunteering in more than 325 medical facilities. ✽ Works with child life specialists, social workers, therapists, and nurses to keep children academically and socially active, and to reduce the stress…
