CAPTAIN: SCOTT THORRINGTON Scott grew up livebaiting from the rocks and estuary fishing on the NSW Central Coast, then fell in love with marlin fishing so purchased a boat in 1988 and started his successful gamefishing charter career. His favourite fishing ground is Port Stephens and his favourite species is definitely marlin – of any size. Scott’s favourite memory is of his daughter, then 14, catching her first billfish and winning Lady’s Day at the Port Stephens Interclub tournament. The game fishing season along Australia’s southeast coast has been challenging for many this year, with striped marlin passing very quickly early on in 2019. However, the black marlin provided some reasonable fishing, particularly for those in southern Queensland. The Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast regions have had a relatively productive inshore season thus far, with many boats regularly tagging up to five or more juvenile blacks each day.The NSW DPI Game Fish Tagging Program has also had a steady flow of recaptures reported. slow start to tassie swordfish season

In mid-January the first swordfish for the Tassie season was hooked and landed, much to the excitement of the deep drop game fishers around the state. Marc Lagerewskij with the first swordfish caught off Tasmania this season. His 330kg sword was caught off Eaglehawk Neck in February and is now a pending State and Australian record on 37kg tackle. Nathan Close, accompanied by two friends Leigh Gore and Damien Gunn, launched his Savage 620 swordfish trailerboat out of Eaglehawk Neck, eager for their first sword drop of the year. Just 45 minutes into their first drop, Nathan’s 37kg outfit came tight and he was hooked-up! He worked the fish hard, and in under an hour the swordfish was boatside.
