who’s who

CAPTAIN: CHAD MILLS From an early age, Chad accompanied his father Bill as he ran Perth’s first fishing charter business. Then on the morning of his 18th birthday, Chad was waiting at the Licensing department to apply for his Master 5 and soon after he started Blue Lightning Charters, now working the magnificent Abrolhos and Montebello Islands. His passion is trying new techniques and locations for all types of offshore species, but especially billfish. SUBSCRIBER: CHLOE HORNHARDT Chloe is 12-years-old and is already a highly-accomplished angler, with an IGFA Smallfry world record to her name for a tiger shark she caught off the Western Australian coast. She loves to chase all species of fish as each one is different, but some of her favourite encounters have been with billfish. Chloe regularly chases gamefish…

too perfect

In late June this year, Trish and I joined our friend, Capt Barry Bailey, aboard his 15m sailing catamaran Mia in Tahiti. Our plan was to head north and troll the coral atoll drop-offs under sail. Although Game fishing from a sailing boat is quite a challenge, we were inspired by the amazing successes enjoyed by Morten Ruud aboard his catamaran sailboat Offshore Hunter. While Morten’s cat has been remarkably customised specifically for game fishing, Barry has also enjoyed regular success even with his traditional sailing cat. In a reasonable breeze it trolls nicely at 7 to 10 knots, and while criss-crossing the Pacific he’s landed yellowfin tuna to nearly 90kg, as well as blue marlin, sailfish, dolphinfish and more. We arrived in Papeete to find those all-too-rare dream conditions. It was…

vale daphne nielsen – founding team member of the cairns giant black marlin fishery

Daphne and her late husband Paddy were members of pioneer Cairns district families and fished from early childhood. They married in 1948, spending their married life on their sugar cane farm at Yorkey’s Knob until Paddy’s passing in 2002. Daphne, as a partner in a local accounting firm, was a certified public account, registered auditor and a tax agent. Daphne and Paddy were in the small group who met at Colonel Jim Gearing-Thomas’s Great Northern Hotel, Cairns, on January 25, 1965, to inaugurate the Cairns Game Fishing Club. They held high hopes for a really big catch to establish the region and the club – as came to pass when Capt George Bransford skippered his vessel Sea Baby for crewman Richard Obach’s 482.62kg (1064lb) black marlin on September 25, 1966. The club…

did you know?

• After Michael Lerner visited Australia and became inspired by Clive Firth, founding President of the GFAA, he returned to the US and founded the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) in 1939 to encourage the sport of fishing for recreation and as a source of scientific data. • In August 1940, the famed novelist Ernest Hemingway was named Vice President of the IGFA, a position he held until his death in 1961. • The IGFA was originally affiliated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, New York, and was instrumental in collecting specimens that increased scientific understanding of pelagic species. • Clive Firth of Australia was elected the IGFA’s first overseas representative, followed by representatives in Nigeria, New Zealand, Bermuda, Bahamas, Chile, Costa Rica, The Canal Zone, Cuba, Hawaii,…

three kings turns on massive kingfish

The remote Three Kings Islands lie more than 50 nautical miles north of New Zealand’s North Cape. This is a dream destination for gamefishermen around the world as these islands are renowned for their prolific quantities of huge yellowtail kingfish, striped marlin, swordfish, plus enormous hapuka and bass groper. However, these rugged islands provide little shelter, and they’re a long way from the nearest facilities. During the summer season, much of the effort is devoted to billfish and tuna species, but with the receding water temperatures of late autumn, attention is switched to the mighty yellowtail kingfish. This powerful predator can be found from the surface to depths well over 200m. Large yellowtail kingfish can be found at the Three Kings all year, but the quantity and size of fish usually ramps…
