I departed the Monaco Yacht Show kicking myself for not getting a chance to look around Flying Fox. Some of the spaces on board – like that two-level saloon – have to be seen to be believed. Thankfully, where I failed, our deputy editor Caroline White succeeded and her world-exclusive story on this huge new Lürssen starts on page 116. The 136-metre, 9,022GT boat slots into 14th place in our definitive listing of the world’s biggest superyachts – but takes the number-one position as the world’s largest yacht available for charter (just a crew of 55 to tip, then). The super-sizing of the world’s superyacht fleet shows no sign of slowing down. Ten years ago, the smallest boat to qualify for Top 101 status was 68-metre Aviva. Today, number 101…

Andrew MacDowall Andrew is a journalist and risk consultant who focuses on emerging markets. He has written for the Financial Times, The Banker and The Guardian. For this issue, he looks at the state of the global superyacht industry (page 66). What struck you most while writing this feature? The rapid growth of the superyacht market. From a handful of boats a few decades ago there are now thousands worldwide Who is the most interesting subject you’ve ever interviewed? Aged 13 I interviewed my mother about her father for a school essay. My grandfather started as a farm labourer but was an incredibly well-read autodidact who taught himself languages including Latin and Ancient Greek. I learned a lot Your most memorable at-sea experience? On my stag-do in Corfu, my best men organised a boat trip taking in…

going to extremes

The striking turquoise hull of Damen’s first SeaXplorer expedition yacht has hit the water. The custom 62-metre Polar Class explorer, which is due for delivery in early 2020, is designed to navigate extreme conditions in luxurious comfort. Key features include a fully certified helideck and hangar, two tender garages and a dive store, as well as provision stores big enough for 30 autonomous days at sea. Naval architecture was penned in-house, while the exterior lines come from Azure Yacht Design and the top-secret interior is by Monaco Yacht Temptation. The SeaXplorer concept was first revealed by Damen at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show. seaxplorer.nl…

eye opener

American aviation hero Orville Wright is pictured here (second from right) on the water in October 1922. Joining them for the ride are, from left, Icelandic Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, poet-playwright Percy MacKaye and his sister Katharine Wright. They’re on board a waterborne vessel but, clearly, this is no boat – the vehicle from which the party is waving is the Loening C-2 Air Yacht, an amphibious airliner powered by Orville’s Cyclone engine. The aircraft was named Wilbur Wright in honour of Orville’s brother. Together, the pair had changed the course of modern aviation and brought the Wright Company to life before Wilbur’s death in 1912. The brothers’ interest in aviation had been sparked at a young age, courtesy of a toy helicopter bought for them by their father. The siblings…

Into the unknown Heesen has presented the first explorer concept in its 41-year-history. Penned inside and out by Winch Design, the 57m Xventure is “the ultimate explorer yacht”, according to Heesen’s director of sales Mark Cavendish. Expertly equipped for extreme expeditions, Xventure will have a cruising range of 5,000nm and cavernous 1,280GT interior. Notable features include a double-height tender garage for an 11.4m fishing boat and 8.6m tender. Elsewhere, the explorer will accommodate a helicopter, submarine, jet skis, scuba diving and fishing equipment. Luxury hasn’t been forgotten, though. Xventure will also feature a winter garden and large swimming pool. Cavendish says the yard intends to use the yacht to target the “next generation of yacht owners”. Heesen has also teamed up with Winch on the recently sold 67m Project Sparta. Due…
