I once read that ownership is the most intimate relationship a person can have with an object. To paraphrase, this is not because the object comes alive, but because the owner does. I have met many a collector who would agree. One serial charterer I know has one of the largest private piano collections in the country. To watch him glide from keyboard to keyboard, century to century, as he plays music to match the piano’s age, is truly to watch art come alive. On another occasion, it was only when showing me his art collection that a shy superyacht owner really opened up. Money plays only a small part in collecting, which we hope becomes clear when reading our pages devoted to it. Patience, knowledge and a little bit…

Champagne was smashed and crowds cheered as Planet Nine made her grand entrance – but this was no ordinary yacht launch. The new Italian Sea Group flagship is notable not just for her length (73.2m), but also for going straight onto the charter market after her delivery, scheduled for March, where she will be listed with Edmiston & Company. Her fully certified aft deck helipad means charter guests can make a spectacular arrival before exploring the 2,100GT interior designed by Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi. The yard explains that the décor “recalls classic taste and [an] elegant atmosphere, with a touch of sober modernity”. With star features including a beach club spa and a panoramic upper deck, guests may never want to leave – and they don’t have to, as Planet…

closing ranks

As our definitive Global Order Book shows, the past four years have seen a steady increase in the number of new build projects over 24m and yet the same period shows a gradual decline in the number of active yards – only 185 this year, down nearly 18 per cent on 2014. The trend is clearly down, suggesting the industry is going through a period of consolidation, with those shipyards remaining seeing an increase in the average number of projects on their order books: up from 3.2 to 4.1. However, Lamberto Tacoli, president of Nautica Italiana and president and CEO of Perini Navi, says that he expects more Italian shipyards will enter the superyacht sector in the coming years, drawing on the country’s strong domestic supply chain. “The next two years will…

eye opener

In the years following the Second World War, America’s entertainment industry boomed and with that came a new troop of press photographers seeking candid moments of silver screen superstars. This subset of celebrity photographers aimed to establish a collective memory that encapsulated something raw and unshielded about the people behind the public image. Among them was François Gragnon, who captured this image of John Wayne in June 1967. It was the same month that western classic El Dorado was released, in which Wayne, true to form, plays the crafty gunslinger Cole Thornton. However, this photo reveals a side of “the Duke” that is somewhat antithetical to his folksy Americana roles. It’s Wayne in his element – in Newport, California, where his yacht, Wild Goose, would moor at Lido Peninsula. He acquired…
