Functionality could be the theme for this issue. As the Monaco Yacht Show approaches and yacht lovers enjoy the yacht-hop of the year, it will be the boats that function the best that win the day. “It is about the simple things,” says Rose Damen, commercial director of Damen Yachting Division (page 208), when illustrating her clients’ increased demand for utility. “Of course we have super comfort, but does the yacht have enough garbage and water storage?” In our annual Design Report (page 113), superyacht designers report a surge in demand for their skill thanks to their ability to make a space work as “Swiss army knives” – according to Ilse Crawford, of Shemara fame – whereby everything works perfectly. She may be a sister to Tankoa’s 2015 launch Suerte , but the Genoa shipyard’s fresh flagship, 72m Solo , is aptly named. The stern was lengthened from the previous design, while an underwater exhaust opens up space on the main and sundecks. Lower down, a longer skeg means an extended waterline and higher top speed of 17.5 knots. Design is by Francesco Paszkowski, who worked with Margherita Casprini on the interior, which sleeps 12 guests. Solo will make her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show before delivery to her owners. tankoa.it This month : remote-controlled superyachts, the jet ski that isn’t a jet ski and the boat caught up in $4.5 billion embezzlement scandal…

eye opener

“A bit of my heart has been here in France ever since I first visited Nice at the beginning of the 1960s to make a film with Alain Delon,” Jane Fonda told Parisian fashion magazine Numéro in 2016. “There was the Nouvelle Vague going on, an amazing effervescence, and then Saint-Tropez, the Riviera…” The film was Les Félins , Joy House or The Love Cage (depending on where you were watching it): a card sharp (Delon), on the lamb from gangsters, is caught in a web of sex and murder with a wealthy widow and her luminous niece (Fonda). The film’s tagline read: “He loved as if his life depended on it – and it did!”It was shot in Villa Torre Clementina in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and all along the Côte d’Azur, where…

We’ve been expecting you... John Staluppi’s latest James Bond-inspired yacht, Spectre , is not under cover any more Following in the wake of the eight other James Bond-monikered yachts commissioned by serial superyacht owner John Staluppi, Spectre has finally emerged into the sun. The 69 metre was launched in Livorno and is the third Benetti ordered by Staluppi, following Diamonds Are Forever and Quantum of Solace . The yacht features naval architecture by Mulder Design, continuing a 30-year partnership between the Dutch studio and Staluppi that dates back to the 1988 launch of Octopussy at Heesen Yachts. Mulder Design revealed that Staluppi specified a maximum draught of 3.2 metres to enable him to cruise the Bahamas, no doubt with a vodka martini in hand. benettiyachts.it…

chef’s corner

Cooking when sailing is a real challenge. When the boat is heeling and your galley window is a beautiful blue colour but fully submerged, facing the ocean bed, your ability to cook has diminished somewhat. Not to mention, as a member of a small crew you are needed to help out in other capacities on deck. You either become a chef out of necessity, because it’s a job, or because you love food. I fall into the latter camp. Food is all I think about, so I can’t imagine not constantly seeking inspiration from the world around me. I had one guest a couple of years ago who wouldn’t eat the same ingredient twice in one day, or let her family repeat ingredients either. For example, if the son had cucumber in…
