There’s a running joke in the BOAT International office about me and rivers. Whenever I bring up the idea for a feature on the world’s superyachtfriendly waterways, eyes start rolling like a ship in a big sea, and then the muttering starts: “He’s banging on about rivers again.” But I finally managed to get my way this month after convincing the team that there’s so much more to cruising than coastlines. Sometimes a yawning river mouth will open before you and the itch to explore it is irresistible. Just the idea of nosing your boat into the Amazon... how can you not be seduced by that? Fresh from the boards of Dutch studio Sinot comes Aqua, a futuristic 112-metre hydrogen-electric superyacht concept created in partnership with Lateral Naval Architects. Aqua features an environmentally friendly propulsion system that uses liquefied hydrogen stored in two 28-tonne vacuum-isolated tanks at -253°C. The result is a top speed of 17 knots and a range of 3,750 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 10 to 12 knots. Key features include a massive owner’s “pavilion”, which occupies the forward half of the upper deck, and the Aqua room ( pictured ) which sits in the bow for far-reaching ocean views. germany shifts its focus

Germany has always built the world’s largest and most iconic superyachts. Many such giants built in the 1930s are still going strong: take 109.5-metre Sea Cloud (by Krupp Germaniawerft) and 136-metre Savarona (by Blohm+Voss, now part of Lürssen). The average size (and complexity) of yachts has grown over the past decade, with the construction at Lürssen of the world’s two largest superyachts, 180.6-metre Azzam (by length) and 156-metre Dilbar (by volume). The average length of the German fleet (296 yachts from 1870 to 2019) is 56.34 metres. “I have worked for 27 years at Abeking & Rasmussen,” says sales director Till von Krause. “During this period the size of the yachts has continuously grown, especially in the last couple of years.” Others see growth happening in different segments as well. “We have built…

Don Johnson, aka Sonny Crockett, is absorbed in conversation on a giant mobile phone (the height of technology back then) with his partner, Detective Rico Tubbs, looking on intently.
