10 TOYS THAT TURNED KIDS INTO CAR CRAFTERS … Things sure have changed in the half century since I was a kid. When I think what kids do today versus what we did back in the day, it becomes clearer why attitudes are so different now when you consider the toys we had. There are a ton of toys that shaped a generation of hot rodders that, because they accelerated the evolutionary process perhaps too quickly, are frowned upon today. Here’s my Top 10: —Johnny Hunkins 1. Bottle rocket. Essentially a high-speed mortar round filled with water and air and powered by a hand-operated pump, these high-impact plastic projectiles were lofted skyward with breathtaking force. Easily 10 times more dangerous than a BB gun, one of these could put your sister in the…

231.6-MPH, 1,500HP 6.2L HELLCAT HEMI Duane Roots / Oakdale, California There’s no doubt that Dodge changed the horsepower game with the introduction of its 707hp Hellcat Hemi. What made things interesting is that these engines were available in both Challenger and four-door Chargers, giving a whole new meaning to the term “four-doors of fury.” For some people, 707 hp still didn’t do the trick, and a whole aftermarket sprung up that helped modify these cars. Perhaps the meanest Hellcat Charger we’ve ever seen (and that’s saying something) belongs to Duane Roots of Oakdale, California. The ’15 Charger makes an estimated 1,500 flywheel horsepower on nitrous, or more than twice that of stock. It’s been more than 150 mph in the quarter-mile, but Duane didn’t stop there; he’s gone 189 mph in the half-mile,…

project update: gen 3 coyote

We’re about a third of the way through engine dyno testing on our Gen 3 Coyote crate engine. If you didn’t know, we were lucky enough to receive one of the first five Gen 3 (’18-up) Coyote crate engines from Ford Performance, PN M-6007-M50C. Even with only performing basic bolt-ons so far, we’ve been blown away by the new platform’s performance. In our first dyno test we were able to produce 532.5 hp and 451.1 lb-ft of torque with only a JLT cold-air intake and an HP Tuners E85 tune through the stock exhaust manifolds. With that testing completed, we moved onto a Coyote intake manifold shootout where we tested the stock ’18 manifold versus the Cobra Jet, Boss 302, and G.T. 350. It was neck and neck between the Cobra…

project hunk-o-junk, part 4

Please let us know, are you guys getting sick of the Hunk-o-Junk 454 yet? We hope not, because we have even bigger plans for it, including upgrading the heads and cam right frickin’ now! For the newbies, a walk down memory lane is in order, so for the loyal Car Craft followers, please feel free to talk amongst yourselves as we bring the new kids up to speed. This all began with a trip to our local Pick-a-Part, where we yanked out a Gen VI 454 from a 1-ton Suburban. After a quick dust off and the replacement of the factory EFI with a simple dual-plane intake, carb, and distributor, the 454 pumped out 378 hp at 4,700 rpm and thumped out 482 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm. We…
