capable snub guns

We’re running a special section on snubnose revolvers in this issue. Snubnose revolvers remain popular, but are sometimes overlooked by new or younger shooters who seem obsessed with magazine capacity when the emphasis should be on getting those first couple of shots on target quickly and accurately. When I entered law enforcement what seems about 100 years ago, I was trained on revolvers. At the time, we had to qualify with our 4-inch, fixed-sight S&W handguns out to 50 yards. We had to reload them under stress in daylight and complete darkness, without looking down or away from potential threats, using the thumb of the left hand on the cylinder flutes to properly index the chambers as we loaded the .357 cartridges. Off-duty I carried a small-frame Charter Arms snubnose .38. It…

ruger offers special 1911 as initial custom shop handgun

Sturm, Ruger and Company, Inc. has been known over the years for its rugged and reliable firearms of all types. But if you wanted something extra special beyond the company’s distributor exclusive models, you had to seek the services of a custom gunsmith. Until now, that is. Now, Ruger has opened a custom shop of its own. And while they’re not accepting work on guns from individual customers at this time, the shop will offer special, high-end editions of their regular models with hands-on attention from Ruger’s own expert gunsmiths. The first handgun to get Ruger’s special Custom Shop treatment is a full-size SR1911 in 9mm. The Ruger Custom Shop craftsmen worked closely with professional Ruger Shooting Team Captain Doug Koenig, winner of numerous national and world shooting competitions. This special SR1911…

XS SIGHTS UNVEILS NEW BIG DOT NIGHT SIGHTS XS Sights has introduced the DXT2 Big Dot Night Sights that provide excellent visibility day or night. These sights feature a large dot front sight in either yellow or orange ahead of a V-notch rear sight. The dots are photoluminescent; they absorb available light and glow for hours. But the front sight also features a tritium insert in the center, so the sights stay visible in extended total darkness. The rear V-notch also features a vertical white stripe, also with a tritium insert so that you “dot the I” for your sight picture. Initially, these sights will be available for these pistols: all Glocks; S&W M&P full-size and compact; S&W M&P Shield; Sig Sauer P320, P226 and P229; Springfield XD series; FNH FN509. The…

seriously sharp

I don’t know any gun guys who don’t also own knives. Lots of them. I have knives in all shapes and sizes. Some are small and thin, are great to carry and are suitable for many daily small jobs. Some have lots of tools that I can use to tighten a screw, open a can or put a new hole in my leather belt when I lose weight, although the prospects of losing weight seem less likely to me as the years pass. Some are suited for hunting or fishing. Still others are optimistically labeled as “survival knives” and some of my knives are beautiful works of art. But my new knife, the Benchmade Vallation is a serious knife for serious work. PROFESSIONAL USE The word “vallation” means a fortification, such as a rampart…
