THERE ARE A LOT OF things you must do when you’re an interiors stylist. Like adjusting the angle of a hosta leaf just so (those who have been there will understand). Or moving a chair to capture its most beautiful angle. Jiggering a doorway to let the perfect amount of light enter a room. Or, as was the case on set in Miami Beach for our ED cover shoot, taking off your pants. Yes, the multitalented designer Jean-Louis Deniot and I swapped trousers. Why? Because, in all seriousness, it was necessary for capturing the life of an apartment: its personality, its soul. In the case of the stunning interior Deniot designed in a Miami Beach aerie on upper Collins Avenue, made recently hot by the additions of the Faena complex…

CARISHA SWANSON In “Kitchen Bonanza,” page 76, ED’s senior market editor shows us must-haves for the aspiring home cook. But we all have to start somewhere. For her, she says, “almost every meal begins with a craft cocktail or a glass of wine.” JEAN-LOUIS DENIOT For Deniot, whose designs for a Miami Beach apartment appear on page 96, location is paramount. “The surrounding environment becomes an extension of my interiors,” the French designer says. “Every city has a unique vibe.” INGRID ABRAMOVITCH As ED’s features director, Abramovitch (who speaks with Jean-Louis Deniot on page 96) has seen many a home, and she thinks the living room tells the most about its owner. “It’s like a Rorschach test,” she says. “Minus the ink blots.” STUDIO PEREGALLI For inspiration, Laura Sartori Rimini of Studio Peregalli, whose designs appear on…

1 Luxurious design and technology make cozy bedfellows in Gamma’s Saks sectional, which combines nubuck upholstery (shown here in Terra-Cotta) with a hydraulic piston mechanism in the back cushions, allowing loungers to adjust the height for added support. $20,992. gammarr.it 2 Joseph Walsh conjures up the rugged coastal landscape of Connemara, Ireland—the source of this table’s green marble—in his Exilumen I piece, whose resin legs evoke stalactites. Fortunately, the only unknown factor of Mark Evans’s handmade wood-and-lacquer Mystery Box, covered with lenticular images of…

think pink!

Pink is a powerfully decadent color. A powdery hue can soften a room; if you are feeling punchy, consider Elsa Schiaparelli’s signature shocking pink, which unapologetically demands attention. When confidently used, a fuchsia velvet sofa or walls will pull your eye in and lift your spirits. In fashion, I adore Tom Ford’s subversive use of pink, lending sex appeal to clean lines. Dolce & Gabbana pair it with a masculine cut, creating a look that is anything but sweet. No matter your style inclination—be it modern, minimalist, or baroque—in the words of the author and actress Kay Thompson: “Think pink!” MOVIE STILLS (2): EVERETT COLLECTION; DAVID HICKS INTERIOR: THE ESTATE OF DAVID HICKS; MILES REDD INTERIOR: WILLIAM WALDRON; FASHION: VOGUE.COM…

birth stones

“It’s very chaotic—in a positive way,” says Christian Hemmerle of the creative process at his family’s exclusive jewelry label, based in Munich and currently celebrating its 125th anniversary (hemmerle.com). To imagine chaos behind the meticulously crafted Hemmerle pieces coveted by collectors worldwide is difficult at best. But as the 37-year-old great-grandson of the company’s founder explains, any disorganization is the product of Hemmerle’s unusual aesthetic. “We make only around 230 pieces a year, because the use of unorthodox materials takes a lot of time to get right. Every design is passionately reviewed and debated by everyone who knows the Hemmerle DNA,” says Christian, who brainstorms in design sessions alongside his father, Stefan; his mother, Sylveli; his wife, Yasmin; and master craftsmen from the workshop. “In 1995, we pivoted from being a…
