stories about Norman Mailer. My favorite goes something like this: It’s widely known that Mailer’s red-brick 1930s waterfront home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, wasn’t just a weekend destination— it was a creative mecca (his more than 40 novels were largely written there). But what got me was that (allegedly, as it’s Mailer we’re talking about), every time he would head out of town, he would first drive his car down Commercial Street—even though it took him in the wrong direction—in order to get one more glimpse of his adopted hometown. I heard this story for the first time while in one of the famous Dune Shacks on the protected Cape Cod National Seashore (its owner, Kevin, a convertible-jeep-driving furniture maker from Boston, was giving us a tour as a favor to my…

SOPHIE PERA The London-based stylist, who joins ELLE DECOR this month as European editor at large, produced “Next to Normal,” on page 184, and Mood Board, on page 66. “As Diana Vreeland said, you gotta have style. It’s what helps you get up in the morning,” Pera says. “It’s your home, your books, everything you love that makes you happy.” JOHN PRITZKER The son of the founder of Hyatt hotels, Pritzker—a hotel and real estate developer who writes about his newest venture in Big Sur, California, on page 108—was born to be a host. “Hoteliers are pleasers,” he says. “There’s no bigger thrill than overhearing somebody talk about a great experience at your hotel. That’s what they remember.” NANCY HASS We asked the New York–based writer, whose feature about a classic Manhattan apartment designed by…

I love a glam detail! Anyone who knows me knows I simply die for over-the-top accents that pack a punch. I take the same approach to interiors as I do to dressing myself: If you start with a somewhat clean— dare I say minimal—slate, you can up the ante with fabulous pieces. I love a splash of unabashed glamour. A gorgeous leopard chaise longue or blazer will brighten up any room or outfit, the same with diamonds and sequins. You can take a simple black suit to a new level with big, sparkly diamond earrings or outrageous crystal boots. It’s all about striking a balance. People should have fun with what they wear and how they live. KEMPNER: FERNANDO BENGOECHEA; CHANEL SPA: COURTESY OF THE RITZ PARIS; KENNETH JAY LANE INTERIOR: PIETER…
