the seven-year itch

WHERE has the time gone? When Adam Scott pulls into Augusta National’s Magnolia Lane for the first time at the 2020 Masters it will be seven years since the coveted green jacket was slipped over his white golf shirt. To be more precise, it will be 2,766 days since a nation of golf fans star-jumped from their lounges as his winning putt rolled perfectly into the cup. It’s often said a week is a long time in golf … 395 of them might seem like an eternity. But little has changed in terms of Australia’s Augusta assault. Scott, as was the case in 2013, heads to Augusta as this country’s highest-ranked player at No.11 in the world. In 2013, he was No.7 and rose to No.3 after his Masters win. “A LOT OF PAST…

it’s not just a game. it’s not just grass.

Sir Grange is a fine-leaf Zoysia Matrella that has unique qualities. Fantastic drought-tolerance, high shade and wear-tolerance, combined with a very fine, deep green leaf, make it the perfect short-mown surface. What separates Sir Grange from other grass-types in the golf world? Density and leaf structure. Sir Grange is approximately twice as dense as couch and kikuyu, meaning it has roughly twice as many plants in any given area. Further to this, Sir Grange leaf blades grow directly upwards from the surface, unlike couch grass which grows outwards from a root or runner. These traits ensure golfers get a better ball lie on Sir Grange and better ball speed in play. DIVOT RECOVERY Due to a strong and vigorous root system, Sir Grange can withstand wear and divots much better than other grass-types.…

when i first played with dustin ... after nine holes i thought he was the best golfer i’d ever seen.”

We’ve had this discussion before, but it’s an ever-changing phenomenon in golf. And, as such, we need to keep an eye on it. For long enough most of us felt that, if everyone in the world played his best, Rory McIlroy would win. Well, not anymore. These days, if everyone plays at the top of their games, my feeling is that Dustin Johnson finishes first. That is, of course, only one of the ways to measure greatness in golf. Another is, “who is the best today?” And that, as has been argued many times, is a different player almost every day. You only have to look at the tournaments around the word to figure that out. No one shoots the lowest score every day. Here’s another thing. In my view, Tiger Woods is…

tiger's winning shots & what you can learn from them

1997 INTO RED NUMBERS THE SHOT: Tiger Woods’ first Masters as a professional in 1997 was much anticipated … but it didn’t start well. The young phenom was four over through the opening nine holes but all that was forgotten by the time he reached the 10th tee. From there, he birdied the 10th, 12th (with a chip-in) and two-putted for another at the par-5 13th hole to get back to one over. He attacked the 500-yard par-5 15th with vigour and his drive bounded over the hill, leaving him 151 yards to the flag, which was tucked into the left edge of the huge green. The downhill lie posed no problems for Woods, who flushed a pitching wedge into eight feet and he rolled the putt in for eagle. He moved into…
