head for the hills!

EVEN THOUGH I’VE been at Guitar World for eight years, I just realized that I’d never been present at a GW cover shoot — until this issue! For this shoot, which took place late last year at our 28th Street studio in NYC, photo duties were handled by Brooklyn’s Rayon Richards, who — to (sort of) quote Seinfeld’s George Costanza — captured “the many moods, the many shades, the many sides” of John Petrucci. JP was photographed with three different (and brand-new) Majesty models from Ernie Ball Music Man’s John Petrucci Collection, and let’s just say that my stubby little screwdriver and I stepped in for some light guitar-tech action (mostly involving moving one set of strap locks from guitar to guitar to guitar). While JP was here, I showed…

Campbell’s Super Cover [It’s] very commendable and interesting to see melodic guitar genius Mike Campbell on the [January 2019] cover — plus a super-cool article with Jake E. Lee (Red Dragon Cartel’s newest album, Patina, is loaded with fabulous tone, great singing and great songs). I also agree with Kim Montgomery’s Sounding Board comments: Any news about Robin Trower would be a treat! —David Tycereapolis P.S.: Am I Guitar World’s longest subscriber? I estimate 35 years. If so, let me know! And remember this: Many modern women are super-talented electric-inspired guitarists. The ladies who use my “under the radar — no website” Modern Music Recording Solutions LLC studio in south Minneapolis are making fretboard history. It’s fun to witness their “smiles for miles” reactions when reaching out for E-A-D chords. Music spins the Earth! I’ve…

THE CLAYPOOL LENNON Delirium is the ongoing musical collaboration between Primus bass legend Les Claypool and multi-instrumentalist Sean Lennon, who also frequently records and tours with his partner, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, as the Ghost of a Sabre Toothed Tiger. The Delirium’s music is often as otherworldly as their latest press photo (see above) and album cover art for South of Reality, their first full-length studio album in three years. With strong elements of prog rock and psychedelia and a streak of Frank Zappa-meets-Captain-Beefheart humor running through a lot of the songs, there’s so much going on that it takes a couple of plays to really get into the duo’s headspace. Of course, it’s a given that Claypool always brings his killer bass chops to the table, but what’s probably less well…

brian may’s new horizons

QUEEN GUITARIST BRIAN May recently unveiled “New Horizons,” his first solo single in 21 years. May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics, wrote the song in tribute to the ongoing NASA New Horizons mission, which achieved the most distant spacecraft flyby in history in an encounter with a remote Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) named Ultima Thule on the edges of the solar system. May is also a New Horizons science collaborator. “New Horizons” celebrates the 12-year journey of the New Horizons probe — and even features spoken word from the late Stephen Hawking. “This project has energized me in a new way,” May said in a press release. “For me, it’s been an exciting challenge to bring two sides of my life together — astronomy and music. It was Alan Stern, the…

1 String Quartet Maurice Ravel I’m officially obsessed with this piece — the harmonic language, the interplay between voices, the development of ideas, the range of expression. 2 “Hansel and Gretel” Daniele Gottardo This piece has it all: gorgeous textures, sophisticated counterpoint, soaring melodies and one of the most perfect guitar solos. 3 “J’Attendrai Swing” Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli I’m blown away that this stuff was recorded live and heavily improvised. 4 Opus 1880 Alexandra Zerner Alexandra Zerner is a Bulgarian guitarist, composer and multi-instrumentalist who writes music with huge artistic commitment. Her latest album, Opus 1880, is an epic journey with ripping guitars, beautiful melodies and carefully crafted compositions. 5 Vieille Prière Bouddhique Lili Boulanger Lili is a treasure of the Impressionistic era of the early 20th century. This particular piece is a go-to for me for study, a soundtrack to yoga,…
