time to hit the (abbey) road

EVERY YEAR, ONE of my bands plays an entire Beatles album (plus another full set’s worth of Fab Four tunes) at the historic and insanely ornate St. George Theatre in Staten Island, New York. The for-charity event pays tribute to whatever Beatles album happens to be turning 50 that year, and this past June 1, we honored the band’s 1969 masterpiece, Abbey Road. Playing Help! in 2015 had its moments. Playing Revolver in 2016 was fun and challenging in its own way. Playing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with a full orchestra in 2017 was otherworldly, and playing the White Album in 2018 was, you know, not without its charm. WHEN THEY FORMED as teenagers in 1982, San Francisco’s Death Angel strived to play complex, unconventional thrash influenced equally by Metallica and Rush. “Right off the bat, we were trying to be progressive when we barely even knew three chords,” says main songwriter and guitarist Rob Cavestany, with a chuckle as he and his bandmates prepare for the release of their ninth album, Humanicide. “We couldn’t play cover tunes because we weren’t good enough, so we just wrote our own songs. We had no idea what we were doing.” Through constant practice and unerring determination, the band members became more proficient and in 1987 they released their first full-length album, The Ultra-Violence.
