neal casal (1968-2019)

OUR THOUGHTS GO out to the family and friends of Neal Casal, a gifted guitarist and photographer who was noted for his incredibly tasty work with the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Ryan Adams, Phil Lesh, Lucinda Williams, Circles Around the Sun, Willie Nelson, Shooter Jennings and many others. The New Jersey-born Casal died August 26 at age 50. “I started playing when I was 12, and for me it was all about the Rolling Stones,” he told us in 2014. “They were the ones who first captured my imagination. Everything they were into provided me with many different roads to explore musically. The Stones really opened up the world for me and made me want to play. “All of those cliché things you hear about playing guitar — like locking yourself in a…

Designing the Perfect GW Hi, guys. Longtime reader, love the magazine. I’ve been wondering what will be in the next issue of Guitar World. It’s due to arrive in the post any day now. I started thinking about my ideal issue of the mag. Any chance I might see something along these lines sometime soon? Cover: Tool and their new album. (If they ever release it!) Transcriptions: “Ramblin’ Man” by the Allman Brothers Band, “Powerslave” by Iron Maiden and “Alternative Ulster” by Stiff Little Fingers. I’d fall over if that arrived in the post! —Niall Cox [Editor’s note: Be sure to track down our October 2019 issue (above), which features Tool’s Adam Jones on the cover.] Gone Fishin’! Please consider a feature story on the amazing Samantha Fish. I saw her live in Montreal, and she’s…

WITH ITS PENCHANT for marrying Latin rhythms with progressive-metal dexterity, Venezuelan-born tapping virtuoso Felix Martin’s latest album, Caracas, comes across as a loving homage to his home country. However, beyond integrating Venezuelan folk textures into the guitarist’s explosive, double-fretboard exploring technique, the collection also is dedicated to the millions of people he marched alongside in the South American country’s capital during the spring of 2017. “There were huge protests, people dying every day — the country was paralyzed,” he recalls, alluding to the violence the grassroots Resistencia faced during clashes with a militarized state force. “I spent a week protesting in Caracas, smelling gas bombs and watching my friends get hurt and go to jail. It was really bad. I had to leave Venezuela because I had a U.S. tour, but…

1 “The Boogieman Surprise” Hollywood Vampires The riff is so simple but has that Joe Perry groove effectiveness. I’m assuming that’s Joe’s riff; maybe it’s Johnny [Depp]’s? Either way, I’m digging this single and ready for the full album. 2 “Shit’s Coming Down” Alien Sex Fiend This is a trippy masterpiece from the Fiend’s newest album, Possessed. I only learned it existed recently, but it’s cool! This song makes me smile every time. 3 Cobra Verde Popol Vuh There’s rarely a time when I can’t put on any Popol Vuh record and space out on the atmosphere. I can’t get enough of the vocals on “Der Tod des Cobra Verde.” 4 “Killers with the Cross” Powerwolf Powerwolf are one of the top five bands I’ve seen live. I love their whole new album, but this one is my favorite. It’s got…
