there and beck

A LONG, LONG, long, long time ago, back when I was a skinny little high school freshman with a Rubber Soul haircut, I’d spend my free time in the school’s modest library reading every rock- or guitar-related book I could find (Hey, it was an all-boys school, so there wasn’t much else to do). There was one very cool hardcover book — I forget the title (again, this was ages ago — back when John Cougar was singing about Jack and Diane and Cheers was centered around Sam and Diane) — that listed around 25 of rock’s greatest guitarists (the list included Nils Lofgren, which I thought was pretty neat). I’ll never forget the intriguing way the author described Jeff Beck — “The guitar player’s guitar player.” It just sounded…

Jonesing for Jones Thank you for giving Adam Jones the cover of the October 2019 issue. The interview was fantastic! He’s the most under-rated guitarist ever to walk the planet. He’s certainly in my top 5, in the company of Hendrix, Page and Gilmour. Adam is not a fretboard gymnast, however; the texture, energy and emotion he brings to the music is so powerful. When my dad passed away a few years ago, I got his 1976 Polaris White Les Paul Recording model, a Telecaster Plus and a Fender Twin Reverb. At age 41, I started to play guitar for the first time in my life, unlocking a passion I didn’t know I had. Adam’s work was a large inspiration for me taking those first steps. Now I can’t put down…

what would django do?

FANS OF FRENCH guitarist Stephane Wrembel’s series of tribute albums to his idol, Django Reinhardt, have reason to celebrate: Earlier this year, he released a fourth edition of Django-inspired recordings titled — quite conveniently — The Django Experiment IV. This coming January, right on schedule, he’ll release The Django Experiment V. When asked if he considers this latest volume to be the conclusion of the series, Wrembel laughs and says, “Oh, no. The last one will be when I die.” During his career, Wrembel has released a host of albums that span genres such as jazz, blues, rock and flamenco, and he’s been an occasional collaborator on film scores for director Woody Allen, including 2011’s Midnight in Paris. But he’s continually come back to his biggest muse as a source of…

david "rock" feinstein of the rods

1 “Purple Haze” Jimi Hendrix It blew my mind when I first heard it. What an inspiration as a guitarist — and at the beginning of the psychedelic era! Those of you who were alive at that time, consider yourselves lucky. 2 “Hush” Deep Purple Deep Purple was always one of my favorite bands, and I was fortunate to have been able to tour with them during their heyday. What a trip! 3 “Blues Deluxe” Jeff Beck He’s a one-of-a-kind guitarist. His early albums, such as Truth and Beckola with Rod Stewart singing, are amazing. He is a true icon and has always been an inspiration. 4 “Whole Lotta Love” Led Zeppelin A band that was breaking ground for the hard rock/heavy metal era. Every player in the band is amazing. Just like the other groups I’ve mentioned — original and…
