Sport for JoeAndrew Cockburn’s portrayal of Joe Biden’s legislative career was seriously distorted [“No Joe!,” Letter from Washington, March]. As Biden’s European policy adviser on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1994 to 2005, I saw him deal masterfully with the two topics of most concern before the attacks of September 11, 2001: the Balkan wars and NATO enlargement.Remarkably, Cockburn’s article fails even to discuss the Balkan conflicts. As early as September 1992, Biden publicly advocated for lifting the arms embargo that discriminated against the Bosnian Muslims, the principal victims of Serbian aggression, and for striking the aggressors with airpower. His proposal became US policy, of course, but only after three years and 100,000 deaths. Similarly, in 1998, Biden called for putting a stop to the Serbian repression of the…

In October 1939, C. S. Lewis delivered a sermon at Oxford’s University Church, later published under the title “Learning in War-Time.” World War II had been under way for just a few weeks, and most people in England were starting to recognize the unprecedented level of mobilization the war effort would require. Even before hostilities officially began, some of Lewis’s Oxford colleagues had wondered whether the university should be temporarily closed “in the event of an international emergency.” Could the work of Oxford and places like it—turning young men of fighting age into philosophers, scholars, and critics—be justified at such a moment? This is the question Lewis sought to address in his sermon. The role of the modern corporate university in any war effort is fairly clear today, but at the…

[Character Study]KILL YOUR DARLINGSBy Vladislav Khodasevich, from Necropolis, which will be published this month by Columbia University Press. In the book, Khodasevich (1886–1939), a Russian poet, profiles Symbolists who lived in Russia in the early twentieth century. Translated from the Russian by Sarah Vitali. On the night of February 22, 1928, in a wretched little hotel in a wretched little neighborhood in Paris, Nina Ivanovna Petrovskaya turned on the gas and took her own life. When the newspapers reported her death, they called her a writer. Somehow, though, the appellation doesn’t quite suit her. To be frank, her writings were insignificant, both in quantity and in quality. She didn’t know how to—and, more importantly, certainly didn’t want to—“waste” what little talent she possessed on literature. She did, however, play a conspicuous…

From a lecture on education delivered to a group of Castleton University students and faculty by Adam Taylor, the superintendent of Rutland City Public Schools in Vermont. The talk was reported by Kate Barcellos for the Rutland Herald.Your job is to motivate and inspire kids to be the greatest they can be. When you walk in that classroom, you have to figure it out. If you don’t cry seventy times in your first year, you’re not meant to be a teacher. That first year is when you really cut your teeth.I’ll use an Oakland analogy. A pimp has to groom, he has to get to know a young lady in order to get her to go out and sell her body to get him money. It’s about building that relationship…
