making it yours

What’s the difference between a showroom and a home? For me, it’s the little things in the space that make it uniquely yours, whether it’s a collection of family pictures on the mantel or pieces that have been with the homeowner for several years. These objects add a sense of belonging to a room, and they are also things I always look out for when I’m deciding which homes to feature in the magazine. Growing up, my parents have always been afraid of destroying our designer home with their own touches. Our interior designer had selected everything in the house, from the drapes on the walls to the furniture and even the clothes in my mother’s open-style walk-in wardrobe. Because of that, my parents were careful to stick strictly to the…

paradise found

British luxury interiors brand de Gournay is famous for hand-painted wallpaper that faithfully reproduces some of the world’s most exquisite painting techniques. But did you know that it also produces porcelain ware and figurines? Much like de Gournay’s wallpaper, the finishes on each figurine is painstakingly reproduced by hand. The Familie Rose Parrot Blanc de Chine porcelain seen here features airbrushed glaze and hand-painted enamels. Just perfect with brand’s unapologetically sumptuous L’Eden wallpaper to create an indoor tropical paradise. In Singapore, de Gournay is exclusively distributed by www.tatumcompany.com.Prices upon request. Visit www.degournay.com to find out more.…

energetic terracotta

Neutral shades are big this year, thanks to their versatility and soothing effect that perfectly suit 2021, a year of recovery on many levels. Of course, a neutral colour doesn’t necessarily have to be mild. It can be bright, energising and as equally versatile as beige or taupe. Yes, we’re talking about terracotta – the reddish-brown that has been popping up here and there in recent collective consciousness, whether on homeware, stationery or soft furnishings. Originating from baked earth, terracotta goes well with almost any natural material like timber and stone, and easily complements a newly acquired houseplant collection, too! “Terracotta is a strong, energetic colour that brings happiness and warmth. It is great in areas with plenty of activities such as the living room and dining area,” says Wong Liangyuan, colour…

wilderness on a tray

British illustrator Alice Shirley is one of Hermes’ long-time collaborators responsible for some of the French brand’s most sumptuous flora and fauna-themed scarves like the Zebra Pegasus and Jaguar Quetzal. She stopped by Gardens by the Bay and Botanical Gardens during her visit to Singapore in 2016, and the result is Wild Singapore, an exuberant face of a lion formed by a gestalt of flora. This artwork is now available on a porcelain change tray that’s included in Hermes’ Spring-Summer 2021 Objets Collection. Hermes Wild Singapore change tray retails for $1,050, at Hermes boutiques and www.hermes.com.…

playful vessels

Originally designed in 1952 with wood by Alexander Girard, Vitra’s trio of Containers inject humour and playfulness into modernism. Inspired by the shape of the traditional apothecary vessels, board game tokens and millinery mannequin, the trio is now made with ceramics and available in three colours: Aubergine, Ice Grey, and Cream, all three will complement the 2021 colour trends. Ceramic Containers retail from €169 (approximately S$271) each from Vitra, www.vitra.com and Vitra Store by W.Atelier.…
